About this listing

Cosy cabin (sleeps 3) with own entrance on beautiful houseboat on unique private mooring in heart of London. Small living with couch, screened cabin with double berth, shared bathroom, fridge, microwave. Surrounded by water, trees, coots & swans yet just a few mins walk to Kings Cross & Islington with their bustling bars, markets, restaurants, shops & theatres. At end of day relax on mooring: cook a BBQ, by arrangement soak in secluded hot tub, or take rowboat to Kings Cross for a sunset drink.

The space

Galatée is a new traditional houseboat located on a quiet wooded private gated mooring in the heart of London. She is bright and warm. The mooring is in a beautiful spot on Regent's Canal, surrounded by trees, with ducks, swans and geese on your doorstep. This is a calm and peaceful place to stay right in the centre of London.

We live in a cabin at the other end of the boat (stern) and are delighted to share Galatée with you. You have a personal entrance onto the bow of the houseboat and to your self-contained, private little cabin comprising a folding table and chairs, TV and sofa-bed, separated by a large cupboard from the small but comfortable double-berth with washbasin. Please be aware that space is confined on a boat. The berth has a foot-well to accommodate a double bed (140 cms wide by 195 cms long). The sofa-bed is 80 cms wide for one adult or child. Complete bed linen and towels are provided and the beds are prepared for you.
The bathroom with small bath, shower and toilet is shared with us. You will have easy use of the bathroom since we generally only use it when our guests are away. There is plentiful hot water, mains electricity, and free wifi.

There are about 25 steps down to the mooring and a large step onto the boat. When possible we will be there personally to welcome you and explain everything about life on board Galatée and how the mooring works. If we are away a friend will meet and greet you. If possible during your stay, we would love to share a drink or coffee. We are pleased to offer complimentary tea, coffee, and cereal. Also a kettle, toaster, plates, cups, glasses and cutlery are provided in your room and you have use of the microwave and fridge.

Living on a houseboat is not like living on dry land. People expect it to be cold and damp, but our home is dry and warm. Galatée is securely moored and does not sway at all in the water unless in the wake of a large boat.
There are some things to remember about boat life:
- The shower/bath does not empty without the flick of a switch for the pump on the side of the bath. There is a chemical toilet.
- The water on the boat is perfectly drinkable and stored in a tank under the flooring. You will hear a noise from the supply pump when taps are turned on.
- Living on board is comfortable and fun but you must be aware that space is confined and interior soundproofing is much less efficient than in a normal house.

In fine weather you can sit outside on the bow of the boat or in our little garden area. The canal is calm and peaceful and there is a beautiful view over the water by day and night; you can see ducks, geese and swans, and from time to time say hi to other friendly house-boaters who go chugging by.

Washing machine/tumble dryer & ironing facilities are available on demand. There is a small supermarket round the corner and an easy walk to Islington Angel shopping center (Waitrose, M&S, Sainsbury's) and to Chapel Market for fresh market food.

We know lots of tips for an great stay in what we think is the best city in the world! We can happily recommend many good restaurants, cafes and gastropubs both in the local area and further afield.

It is a pleasant walk along the towpath to King's Cross and Granary Square (10/15 mins). Towards the east is Islington Angel, with its restaurants, theatres, music clubs, and shopping centre, and towards the west it's about a 25 minute walk along the canal to Camden lock and the attractions of Camden market. And there is an abundance of railway, underground and bus connections in the area.

This is a beautiful, calm and central location!

This is a very special place to stay. Only ten minutes walk from trendy King's Place (with a giant Waitrose and plenty of places to eat and drink) and St Pancras Station, yet its position in an extremely secluded spot right by the Islington Tunnel is tranquil and very private. The space inside the boat is neat and cosy, with basic facilities to make breakfast - but this didn't matter, as Caravan, an excellent coffee shop is so close. We would definitely book this space again when we visit the capital.

Lovely boat right in the center of everything on Regent's Canal. It's nice to have a private mooring, and the community at the mooring was very welcoming. Simon and Sarah are very kind, and I mostly had the boat to myself for the stay.

A very convenient location, nice walk to king's cross along the river. Beautiful views of the river. Originally was worried the room won't fit three adults but we had a lovely stay there. Sarah has left plenty food for the breakfast and clear instructions for us. Definitely a totally different experience in centre London.

We absolutely loved staying in this cozy little oasis in the middle of London. We had more than enough room for the two of us and Simon and Sarah provided everything we could have needed and more. The location is perfect while still feeling away from it all. It was nice and quiet at night, and we slept very well here which was perfect for getting over any jet lag. Our only regret is that we didn't have more time here just to lounge around and enjoy life on a boat. Highly recommend for a unique and enjoyable experience.

My wife and I spent five nights aboard the Galatee during the middle of our two-week trip to London. The boat was exactly as described, and was quite spacious. Simon and Sarah did a wonderful job communicating with us to make our arrival easy, and offered us plenty of advice and tips on things to do in the neighborhood. The privacy of the mooring, with its key-access gatehouse, was especially nice. The Galatee herself is a fine ship. My wife and I enjoyed sitting out on the bow at night, resting our feet and drinking some wine after miles of walking, and watching the sun set. The bedroom and bathroom were both of a good size for a boat, and were clean and tidy. The sofa bed made an ideal spot for reading after the sun went down. The location of this listing was fantastic--right near King's Cross St. Pancras, with numerous Tube lines stopping there. And Granary Square, a ten-minute walk up the towpath, was amazing: always something going on, lots of great restaurants, a Waitrose to pick up supplies or snacks. Future guests should make sure to check out the Book Barge, a floating book store moored along the Regent's Canal. Also make sure to stop in at The Thornhill Arms, the local pub near where Galatee is moored. And enjoy a nice stroll along the Regent's Canal towpath for a truly unique view of London. In short, I highly recommend staying on the Galatee.

So quiet and still amazingly close to everything. We loved staying at the boat, sitting outside in the morning, greeting the houseboats floating by and seeing the Swans, Gees, Ducks and Squirrels doing their territory claims:-) Simon greeted us at arrival and everything was ready, pretty and so much a beautiful houseboat experience. Living near kings cross St Pancras station is very valuable, especially in going to airports. Great area, with nothing left to want, while staying there. Thanks again. Urd and Emilie

This is a wonderful place to stay in central London. We had a great time and were so happy that we chose to be on a canal boat. It's small but in a good way, and gave us an appreciation of a different way of living. Then there were the added benefits of having a swan family glide by, and ducks, and geese, and the calm puttering of other canal boats going past. And you can walk to Kings Cross in a few minutes. Sarah and Simon were kind and generous hosts who helped make our stay memorable.
