Finding an nice house in Normandy in winter is not easy. It gets difficult when 4 adults are travelling with 3 dogs. Maria & Arthur are incredible friendly hosts who answered our question concerning the number of toilets that there was one only but that they thought of including another in the upstairs bathroom anyway. Which they did. Wow!
The back to the tiny little village of Hatainville the house faces the Dunes d'Hatainville a nature preserve with stunning beauty, peace and calm. You walk accross it when going app. 20-30 min to the sea. Plenty of nature walks, perfect for hikers, nature lovers and dogs. Appart from some restricted areas dogs are allowed without the leash.
The house is not between the dunes and the sea, litteraly, but between the dunes and the village. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to get there by car. A well-equipped Carrefour supermarket is 7 minutes by car.
The house is exceptional tastefully decorated, has nearly everything you need and has a special, warm atmosphere. If you don't know how to operate a chimney yet, you will learn it quickly, we did. I would have liked to take home the beautiful vintage dinner table that sits 10. Wooden terrace, huge closed in garden with fig trees and herbs... a home for body and soul, a romantic hideaway.
We are experienced vacation home and France travelers, first time with Airbnb though. Most vacation homes are the second houses of someone, but never before did we have so little store room especially in the kitchen. This may be special with the Airbnb concept. The upper bedroom has plenty of wardrobe space, the lower has little. We stored our food in boxes on the floor in the big kitchen, where there's all you need, from salt, spices to kitchen tools and pots.
The housekeeper welcomed us warmly, but the house was cold. She did not know how to light the fire in the chimney, she said. Later Arthur wrote, she had forgotten to do it. So there might be some communication problems. I explicitly asked about linen and towels beforehand and was told, both were included. On our arrival there were linen but no towels. After a phone call we received one bathtowel per person with the information, that towels had been stolen which sure is a bad thing. I can understand that changes had to be made. We purchased towels. Just a little communication problem - but the good things shine much brighter!!! Moreover it is absolutely legitimate to change the extent of items that can be used. I would simpy recommend to make it the other way round to prevent irritation: first change the written information then make the changes. Just my two cents.
We received delicious biscuits as Christmas present and were not charged us for a coffee cup that was chipped. Very nice, thank you!
No house is perfect. But this one is pretty close.
Would we come back? Definitely!
