Our stay on Axel's sailboat was a truly great experience. We were able to see Bocas from a perspective that is only available through Axel and similar listings. Communication beforehand was proper and sufficient, and Axel met us the morning of our check-in right on schedule. The boat was in good condition and we enjoyed the personal touches of covered seating and hammock up front as well as the large covered cockpit for outdoor dining. Below deck is spacious even with the 3 of us, keeping in mind you are on a sailboat. Our room was adequate, but there is no A/C so ventilation is key. Our first night was rather warm due to the rain not allowing us to open our hatches. The bathroom is what you would expect if you have ever been on a boat. We were even able to enjoy hot showers. Not only is Axel your skipper, but he is also your personal chef. We enjoyed fantastic meals prepared throughout each day. Although we did enjoy our stay, I must provide some criticism to ensure future guests may know what they are getting themselves into. Upon requesting to book with Axel, I was provided an itinerary of the 2 night/ 3 day sail. This included multiple snorkeling locations as well as an early morning departure for the zapatillas in order to beat the tour boats and have it somewhat to ourselves. Neither of these occurred on our trip. This can be partially attributed to the weather, which was less than desirable the majority of our time on board, but did not negatively effect the ability to sail. We did not snorkel once. Our first afternoon was overcast and Axel advised against it due to visibility. Instead we accompanied him on a fuel run in his dinghy. Day 2 was our sail to zapatillas, which Axel described as "arriving early, you will have the island to yourself." To my surprise we did not depart until 10 am, with all the tour boats passing us on our way out. Upon arrival at 1 pm, we were told we would have an hour and half to enjoy before returning to protected waters. Once again, we were not able to snorkel mainly due to time constraints of Axel's schedule. Night 2 was spent in Dolphin Bay, which we arrived in just before sunset. No time for any swimming or snorkeling here either. Like I previously stated, this is partially the weather's fault. If you are expecting nice weather, you may want to explore other destinations. Bocas Del Toro is rarely graced with sunny skies. It was cloudy and or rainy the majority of our 7 nights here. Even with the weather, I still feel Axel steered us away from swimming/snorkeling. I maybe should have been more adamant about it, but being on his boat we just went with what he said. All in all we had a wonderful time and it was an experience we will not soon forget....

Response from Axel:
Yes, we had a lot of rain especially at night and it poured down until 9:30 of our first morning and - despite all electronics - as a skipper I want some visibility to get through all the reefs and yes the schedule on a Boat depends as well on the weather . . . July has statistically the most rainfall. When we arrived at our first anchorage I asked You whether You are ready to snorkel and you picked a mask and flippers and dropped it into our dinghy. You decided to wait a little bit for some better light . . . After a while I suggested to visit the restaurant on Crawl Cay because the docks there have a perfect view into the water with a lot of fish. We explored the place and I said hello to the owners, we did not order any drinks and I had the feeling I could at least get two gallons of fuel for the dinghy to give the some business. You did not pick up the chance to snorkel with all the fishes down there . . . On our way back to the boat we surrounded the buoy with the best reef but again You did not pick up the chance to snorkel . . . back on the boat you were asking some questions about the buildings on the next property, we jumped into the dinghy and went straight for it to have a look . . . Most of the way to the Zappatillas we sailed until I started the engine to arrive sooner. We anchored in 10 feet of water and could not see the bottom, there was a layer of rainwater which makes snorkeling blurry . . . Did You go for a swim on that pristine beach ? When we arrived in Dolphin Bay it was not too late for a swim or snorkeling, it just was not that inviting. Schedule for next morning you determined to arrive in Bocas at 11:30 so we had to leave for Bocas at 9:00 AM. On the way the sun came out and You easily could have asked for a snorkel spot . . . Wish you would have been here the last few days with full sunshine and a sky full of stars, you all the best . . . skipper Axel

My husband and I decided to splurge for 2 nights on Axel's sailboat with him as the skipper. It was such a good decision, as we had the most amazing time! We easily found him at our meeting point, and after some introductions we headed out for some groceries. We bought all the food, but he did all the cooking. We loved his meals that he prepared for us, they were not only fresh and healthy, but very tasty and delicious. We did the dishes - which takes less than 10 minutes. It was a great agreement! We really appreciated that he is not uptight about when the dishes get done, we were able to wait until we were at a calm location so that we didn't get sea sick. He is very laid back, and we really felt like he was most interested in making sure that our experience was the best that it could possibly be. When he needed to explain to us how he likes things done on the boat, he did it gently and in a way that we still felt totally welcomed. The sailboat is beautiful, and you can tell he takes pride in ownership of Sea Level. He really went out of his way to make sure that we really enjoyed everything from meals, sailing, sightseeing, and excursions. A huge highlight for us was going to Zapatillos Island. It was really cool getting there a couple of hours before any of the tour boats came, and we literally had the island to ourselves all morning. It was amazing! We would do it all again if we had the chance, and really recommend you book! It is SO worth the money! Axel cares about his guests, and you really get the feeling that as long as you respect him and his boat, he will go out of his way to make sure you have the best time ever.
