“Luana Ola” in Hawai’ian means “To be at leisure, enjoying pleasant surroundings and good health”. Luana Ola Villa & Cottages are located on the tropical Hamakua Coast, near Waipio Valley on the Big Island of Hawaii. Imagine watching from your own private lanai (deck) a panoramic, unobstructed view of the ocean, embraced between a Terra Verdeʹ of Hawaii and a never boring, brilliant Big Sky. The ocean reflects the sky that is often shaped by the ocean. The showers are mostly gentle, warm and do not wear out their welcome. And when the trade winds bring a heavy rain, they reward you with a white water river running through the gulch guarding you on the left. The sound of thundering white waters passing you as you eat dinner, read, or lay in bed will make you wish for another strong storm to come by. The sky oscillates between azure colors the Mediterranean cannot have, the grey of passing clouds, and on a clear night you can be tempted to pretend you are grabbing a sparkling jewel from a pitch black heaven. Spend the whole day simply relaxing or visit nearby Waipio Valley, the Big Island’s Grand Canyon with an ocean starting at a black sand beach, or drive 25 minutes to the Akaka Falls, among the tallest cascading falls in North America. Hilo, the Capital, is 45 minutes south of us. Kona is 50 minutes away. Hapuna Beach, voted the best beach in the State of Hawai’i and one of the top 10 beaches in the U.S., is 40 minutes from us. The active part of the Mauna Loa Volcano (the red eye) is 1.5 hours away. Our location is completely sheltered from the active vents on the Island by the massive 14,000 feet Mauna Kea Mountain. The house it self is 3 stories high with the garage on the ground level. The first floor is all open with the kitchen and dining room on one level and the living room and deck down 3 steps. There is also a 1/2 bath and a storage room. The upstairs has the spa bath, shower, etc., the bedroom, a sun room, deck, laundry area and closet. Plus a small office area with desk and printer/copier which you are welcome to use to print your boarding passes. Both toilets have a bidet attachment for better personal hygiene. There is not a lot of privacy between the bedroom area and the sun room. Anyone sleeping on the bamboo day beds must past the master bed to get to the bathroom. The Endless Wave pool is behind the house. It is solar heater and can be used with or without the wave function. Available for your use are beach towels, 2 boogie boards, snorkel gear, a cooler and a small Smokey Joe BBQ. Hawaii taxes of 13.42% must be collected after you arrive. You can leave cash or check made out to Patricia El-Gasseir on the table when you leave or I can request money through Airbnb. Come visit us and enjoy the view.
Guests have the whole house and Endless Wave pool to themselves. We reserve the garage for our personal use.
Interaction with guests
We live on the mainland but are always available by phone or email. We have a housekeeper (Virginia Stephens (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)) who lives nearby and can help if a need arises.
Other things to note
Although the house can sleep 6 people, there is not a lot of privacy for those who use the Cal King bed and the bamboo day beds in the Sun room. Whoever sleeps in the Sun room must go through the bed room area to get to the bathroom. It is not good for people who have problems climbing stairs. There is one flight up to the front door, a flight up to the bedroom and a flight down to the pool area. Please do not feed the fish. There is no air conditioner. It is not necessary. There are fans and many windows with screens. During the rainy season, if needed, there is a dehumidifier available and 2 small portable heaters. We are required to collect the Hawaii Transient Accommodations (TA) and General Excise (GE) taxes after you arrive/before you leave. It is 13.42 % of the total of the house plus cleaning. Hawaii Tax ID #W72259339-01. Checks made out to Patricia El-Gasseir

NO smoking, no drugs, no pets. Cleanliness is an absolute necessity. It is a tropical location. In order to keep the gecko, insect, etc at bay, please wash all dishes, put all food in sealed containers and take out the trash frequently. If possible take your trash and recycling to the transfer station on Plumeria Street. Honokaa has mixed recycling which means paper, card board, plastic, cans and bottles (except glass) are recycled together. A large garbage can is at the bottom of the steps and the recycling bins are in the garage. Keep glass separate please. If you are staying more than 1 week, you must take you trash to the transfer station because the housekeeper will not come around. Because beach towels have disappeared, you will be charged $20 for each missing towel. $5 for lost keys. Remember to pay the Hawaii TA tax before you leave. Mahalo
