The setting of Casitas Nanita is second to none. It is absolutely magical, to look out over the sweeping hills of the island, and see how lush and green and vibrant it is, even in the dead of winter. You need a car and nerves of steel to access the place though, and you have to be prepared to drive on very tricky mountain roads in order to go anywhere, as it really is up in the middle of nowhere. The sound of birdsong everyday is exquisite, and the smell of life is incredible. The actual house itself is very pretty from the outside, with lots of rustic Spanish features which make it look cute. Inside it is a little basic, and very dark due to the fact that there are few windows in house C. This was a shame as it made it fairly unpleasant to be indoors, and wasn't really warm enough to be outdoors, so meant we felt compelled to take a trip everyday. We have never been to an Air BnB property before where the host hasn't left basic food stuffs to get started - such as tea, coffee, sugar, milk, salt, pepper, oil. Often, places where we have stayed have left fully stocked larders, which is an unexpected treat. These cupboards and shelves were totally empty. We arrived at 10:30pm on a Saturday with no food and no shops still open. After a day of travelling, this was not the ideal way to start. There was a fairly serious problem with ants unfortunately, meaning the kitchen tops, the table and the bathtub were all covered in them at all times. This made things feel less clean than they actually were, and caused problems for me as they tended to swarm all over my medication and the pump I use to administer it. There was also a sewage problem of some sort, so the toilet had a very nasty smell. For the first couple of days we could contain it in the cubicle and ignore it, but as the toilet door didn't close properly, and the window opened inside a cave wall so didn't let any fresh air in, by day three, it was really rather unbearable. We ended up checking out three days early and paying to stay elsewhere for our final weekend, which was a great shame. We loved the surroundings of this place, and the farmer who looked after the place (and us!) was wonderful. We had daily conversations in broken language and gestures, which were great fun. Unfortunately, it just didn't deliver what it had promised, and was a lot further from civilisation than we thought it would be.
