Our cozy cape cod is perfectly located in one of Charlottesville's oldest and most family friendly neighborhoods. Close to downtown, Uva and the Barracks Road area, it is a perfect place to stay and enjoy all that Charlottesville has to offer.

The space

This 1,600 square foot, 1940's cottage has been recently renovated and includes an updated kitchen and bathroom and an open floor plan living room, dining area and kitchen. There are two bedrooms and 1 bathroom. The master bedroom is upstairs and has a king sized natural latex mattress. The second bedroom is a nursery that has a crib and changing table and a toddler bed. The nursery is located next to the bathroom on the main floor. The basement is finished and there is a playroom area that can double as another bedroom. There is a comfortable, queen size air bed that can be setup. We can accommodate 4 guests and a baby and toddler between the master bedroom and basement air bed, crib and toddler bed. 2 additional guests can be accommodated on the living room sectional couch and the couch in the basement, which are comfortable to sleep on and great for the single folks in your party. :)

Additionally, we do also have a cottage on the property that can accommodate 4 additional guests, should you have a larger party. We can do a bulk rate for the house and cottage together should that suit your stay better. Just let us know!

The kitchen is small, yet well appointed with a gas stove and stainless steel appliances. We have everything you need to cook and enjoy a tasty meal.

In lieu of a microwave and coffee maker, we have a coffee grinder and french press. Use the gas stove for popcorn and reheating food. There is also a toaster oven.

We just cancelled our cable. We have a large flat screen TV that is set up with ROKU. There is a DVD player and our internet wifi is 1000mbps provided by TING "crazy fast internet". We've found that you can upload a 2 hour movie in about 2 seconds. Its awesome.

The bathroom has an original, full sized cast iron tub and ceramic tile surround shower. There is a pedestal sink and all of the fixtures are brushed nickel. The floor is indian slate. There is a linen closet within the bathroom stocked with towels and washcloths.

There is a working wood stove in the dining area that creates a cozy atmosphere. Wood for the woodstove is located on the back deck, inside the screen porch. The mid century modern dining room table can be adjusted to accommodate up to 10 people.

There is a laundry room with a front loading washer and dryer.

The front yard is tastefully landscaped in native plants and there is a large screened in porch with a large table and chairs and new deck with a Weber grill on the back of the house to enjoy.

This is our home, where we live full time. We have taken care to incorporate beautiful color and cool design ideas to make our older home unique, comfortable and cozy and we hope you enjoy your stay!

Guest access

Full kitchen, laundry, front and back yards, back deck, free off street parking.

Interaction with guests

We can leave you alone with a key for access in a lock box. Should you need anything, you can contact us via email or cell phone.

Other things to note

Several restaurants on the UVA corner deliver to Oxford Road. College Inn, Basil and Mellow Mushroom are a few. Bodos bagels is a cville staple and is located on Preston Avenue. Shenendoah Joe is our favorite coffee, and is also located on Preston Avenue. Whole Foods is a 5 minute drive off of 250, and there is a Kroger and Harris Teeter at the Barracks Road shopping center, also 5 minutes away. For a Health Food Store, Integral Yoga is located on Preston Avenue, next to Mona Lisa Pasta, which serves up fresh, delicious pasta and sauces daily.

Aly's home is lovely -- comfortable, clean, totally charming. We arrived late and exhausted after many, many long hours in the car; the moment we walked through the door, our moods instantly improved. It was welcoming and adorable. Felt like a home away from home.

We came in with high expectation and left with it being exceeded. If you were charmed by the photographs and the descriptions of this gem of a home, you will not be disappointed. To the contrary, if this kind of charm and setting appeals to you, you will be wanting to find reasons to come back soon and often. Aly is an exceptionally wonderful, accommodating, responsive and thoughtful host. The home is simply wonderful. Perfectly situated close to everything yet providing you the serenity and quiet you may be seeking for a brief respite from the hustle and bustle of a very busy and packed graduation weekend, as was the case for us.

The house has a very serious roach issue. If it is a new issue or not, I'm not aware. We did reach out to Ali after a few days, because we could not stay there any longer with the kids, because it was just disgusting. She knows they get bugs, and said they are not the German kind of roaches, but from the trees outside, which did not quell the anxiousness of seeing them every night. Host two days after offering refund for roaches for our last night only (not the entire trip), then reached out and explained that they now discovered house was 'filthy' from us, and were annoyed that we didn't wash their laundry from the beds, put toys back in exact boxes they came out of, and stole their toothbrushes. We are extremely shocked, and the offer of pictures of a party where we had newborns is shocking. She gave us a thinly veiled threat with a bad review of us with 'pictures' on Airbnb and were hopeful we could sort this out between us only. Which now explains why I never read about them before, and we thought this was a beautiful place to spend Thanksgiving. We were anxious every evening walking into the bathroom, we would find them on the shower curtains, sinks and bath, and blocked up the bathroom doors, sinks and baths, so they couldn't come up and into the baby room next door. Which they still did. When we did leave early, because of the roaches in the kids beds, we spoke to Ali, and she explained they decline to exterminate with poison because of their own kids. Ali offered the refund for the last night, but when pushed a few days later about the refund, came back with would rather keep this issue between us, so not to leave a bad a review about us, and that they 'took pictures' of our mess. Which I suspect is why we never read about the roaches before, and it seemed like a fantastic rental. They offered $110.50 to quietly put the matter to bed, yet. I don't want another family to stay there, where the roach nest is basically outside the kids room, and like clockwork, at 10.30pm every evening, they all start coming out under the bathroom door. You will have a minimum of six an evening on the ground floor, two in the bedroom, and it's sporadic in the basement. From the host's reaction, I suspect this isn't the first time it happened in the main house rental, and everyone else took her 'I would rather handle this with you directly than write a bad review on your profile' email to heart.

Response from Aly B.:
I am very disappointed that things went the way they did with Janet. After our communication broke down, I asked AirBnb for help. They agreed that we handled the situation with her appropriately after I submitted proof of our responsiveness and willingness to help, proof of no roach "infestation", pictures of her mess left behind and emails of her ludicrous accusations and abusive tone. It is important to note that AirBnB is a platform where people rent out their personal living space to guests. It is not to be confused with a 5 star Hotel. Everyone has some kind of bugs in their houses at different times of year and we do what we can to keep them at bay. We have the house professionally cleaned before every guest and I personally clean the house and do the laundry after guests leave. We only expect that our guests treat our house as if it were theirs and to clean up mess you make before you leave. Leave the house as you find it, is a fair and clear expectation. I love being a host. It is fun and I meet a lot of cool people. I like the sense of community I feel, especially now with our world so chaotic, when people stay at our place and they have a great time and notice the special touches we leave for them. We strive to leave you a stylish, centrally located and super clean house. And a sweet goody basket too! We live here full time and have 2 young kids and it is an awesome house for us and our family and we are happy to share it when we go out of town. After 2 years of renting both the house and our Tiny Home on AirBnb, this experience is the first time we have had a bad experience with a guest in our house. The shared economy goes both ways. If you are a bad guest, you get a bad review. I offered to Janet an opportunity to be responsible for her behavior. She refused. She denied there being a mess, but we took photos as soon as we got home and it was pretty clear to AirBnb that we were being responsible hosts. If your host doesn't help you or the listing is inaccurate, or if there really is a bug infestation, the host should do everything they can to help. Call your host immediately and notify AirBnb if you find your accommodations to be gross, or not fitting of your needs. I am happy to address any concerns anyone may have about this situation.

We had a lovely stay at their place. Everything was clean when we got there and was exactly as we told it would be. They had plenty of linens as they has said they would and even fixed the air mattress. Great amenities and they even left us some snacks and coffee, which was a great touch. The hosts were out of town, but they made sure that we felt at home and knew what was expected. Overall a lovely stay and I would definitely return.
