Casa Isadora is a quirky artist's cave house, off the beaten track, but just 6km from the sea. It is secluded and tranquil, in a rural setting. Cut from the side of the hill, it is a real slice of Andalusian history.

Beautiful arched cave rooms lead back to tranquil bedrooms. The cave comfortably sleeps 4 in 2 bedrooms, with king size beds (1 with an en-suite), there is also a large sofa bed in a communal area. A sofa in the sitting room may be made for a guest on request.

The space
There is ample parking on the road, or on our drive. The garden is steep, and leads up to the cave house. The garden is planted with mature trees and shrubs. There is a weeping pepper tree, a huge strelitzia, 2 pomegranates, almond trees, a jacaranda, flowering cacti, a fig, some young olives and lots of flowers. The steep gardens lead to a terrace with far-reaching views across the hamlet to the mountains beyond. The terrace has ample seating and is shaded by a grape vine and bougainvillea. The terrace faces west to capture the sunset.

This accommodation may not be suitable for young children as the house is cut from the side of a steep hill, so there are drops from the terraces etc. Young children will need to be supervised.

Sleeping in a cave is quiet, still and peaceful. The bedrooms are divided by curtains (with no internal doors as caves have to breathe). The rooms hold a year round temperature of 17° to 23°. It is cool in the summer months and cosy in the winter with wall-mounted electric heaters.

Some of the cave houses in Andalusia go back to Neolithic times. Caves are different to conventional houses, they need to breathe; we recommend throwing the windows open when you arrive, allowing air to circulate between the rooms whenever you are home. All cave houses need a little extra help, it is normal to have a dehumidifier on a timer. You can, of course, unplug the timer during your stay, but please plug it in again at the end of your trip.

Where you’ll be

Cuevas del Almanzora, Andalucía, Spain

A car is essential as Grima is a sleepy little hamlet, without bars or shops; but there are shops, bars, bakeries and a cashpoint in Guazamara (2km) and a wonderful well priced tapas bar just 5km away. Larger supermarkets are in Pulpi or Cuevas del Almonzora.

We are just 6km from the sea, meaning that you can easily visit the resorts of San Juan de los Terreros, Villaricos, Garrucha or Mojacar. Aquavera waterpark is a 25 minute drive away, and other great days out include beautiful Moorish forts and Roman ruins all within easy reach. Places of note are: the Alhambra in Grenada, Moorish forts in Almeria, Roman amphitheatre in Cartagena and the fabulous cities of Murcia and Alicante.

Photographer by trade. Loves good food, friends and family. Going to new places, swimming in open water or relaxing by an open fire are probably my favourite things to do.

During your stay

I am not based in Spain (alas), but there is a well written instruction manual in the kitchen. I will send you directions and details by email. You can contact me by phone or email if you have any problems.

Please note that as it is our family house, it does have some personal possessions in the house, but there is ample hanging space and empty drawers in both bedrooms and an empty chest of drawers in the Moroccan room.
