Small and cozy 100 year old apartment in the heart of Hafnarfjordur. Within driving distance from most of the popular sites in the southern part of the country. Nearby are some beautiful places that have yet to be discovered by most of our foreign visitors.

The space
The house is in a unique location, I´ts about 30 minutes drive from the airport, 35 minutes from the Blue lagoon and about two minutes walk to the bus stop. From there it´s easy to go to Reykjavík Centrum.

The house is near Hafnarfjörður Centrum and the harbour area. It´s close to an excellent swimming pool, bakery, the ÁTVR, the only stores you can buy Beer wine and liquor in Iceland. There are two gyms, Hress, and World Class in the area. I usually go shopping in the “Krónan” or “Bónus” and Costco is also near. All this is within 5 minutes driving distance.

Nearby is a little stream that empties into a tiny lake. The little stream is only about five minutes walk from the apartment. It´s easy to find, just walk to the end of my street. Walk downhill. Can´t miss it. One of the things I love is walking upstream. The stream is beautiful in it self, it´s got little browntrout and of course ducks . As a reward for your walk you get to see where the stream begins in a the lava. This little spring used to be the sole source of water for all of Hafnarfjörður. The lava is something most of our guests are not used to seeing, so I reccomend the walk and the forested area that can be seen from the spring. Trees are rare in Iceland. The combination of lava and trees is even rarer. Enjoy.

Guest access
You have acces to all my apartment and the room in the basement with the dryer and the washing machine. My machines are the ones to the left. I share this room with my topfloor neighbour so please take that into account if you meet him. A word of caution. All the old houses have steep ladders down to the basement. The ladder in Villa Villekulla is no exception. So be cautious. The Icelandic way is to back down the stairs. That is the safest way.

Other things to note
The house is a hundred years old, that means everyone in the house has to be mindful, close doors, don´t slam them and try to keep the noice down after 10 in the afternoon. My neigbours above and below are excellent people who like me try to keep the noise to a minimum. In a hundred year old house you simply can´t avoid hearing that there are other families living in the house.

Enjoy the fact that you can drink the tapwater in Iceland. There is no reason to buy expensive water in plastic bottles. The tapwater is safe and excellent to drink.

We are renovating the house which I hope you can see on the pictures in my profile. In the summer and spring we will be renovating some parts of the house on the outside. I kindly ask you to be understanding with regard to that.

Dining out tends to be expensive in Iceland. If you are a gourmet by all means enjoy some of the finest restaurants in the world in down town Reykjavík. I sometimes do and I love it. However, there are some places that are not expensive and relatively close to the apartment. In the harbour area of Hafnarfjörður there are som new restaurants and cafés that have been getting good reviews in the local newspaper. I haven´t tried all of them. One of the café´s is “Súfistinn”. “The Sufi”. The Sufi is one of my favorite cafés and one many of the locals favor. As a rule the restaurants in Hafnarfjörður tend to be less expensive than the restaurants in down town Reykjavík, and being with in walking distance from the apartment certainly is nice when you want to enyoy a glass or two of wine, price of taxifares being what they are in Iceland...

Ikea. As unbelievable this may sound Ikea sells traditional Icelandic dishes to affordable prices. If you want to try dishes the way my grandmother used to make them, Ikea is the place to go. They offer breakfast to affordable prices from 1030 in the morning. They also have vegan options.

Fylgifiskar. They offer excellent fish dishes to affordable prices. Ten minutes drive from the apartment. They are only open from 1130 to 1400 Monday - Friday. Try it. You won´t be dissapointed.

If you like joggin or taking a good walk, I suggest you walk the path along the sea in the harbour area. It´s easy to find. Go to the small mall “Fjörður” and simply walk the 50 meters down to the sea. Many of the local restaurants and cafes are located near the shopping mall so its easy to find. It´s only about 10 minutes walk from the apartment to the harbour area. Try walking the “Austurgata” street on your way to the Sufi. The traditional restored houses are aabsolutely worth the walk.

“Vitinn”. In English: The lighthouse. If you take a drive to the Reykjanes peninsula, there is a small fishing village, Sandgerði. They have a restaurant “Vitinn” that specialices in crab soup, it´s absolutely worth the drive and to affordable prices. From there it´s only a 5 minutes drive to Garðskagaviti lighthouse the oldest lighthouse in Iceland. They have a cafe in the lighthouse. It hard work getting to the top floor. The table at the top is worth it, the experience and the sight is unforgettable.

Location

Hafnarfjörður, Iceland

For the first 60 years of its life, Villa Villekulla was in another place in Hafnarfjörður. Then it was moved to its present location. The reason for this was that people didn´t want to build on this side of the road, the backyard on the other side was considered to be more sunny. The powers that be, therefore decided to give people permission to move older houses to the street. The people of Hafnarfjörður loved the idea. As a result no two houses on my side of the street are alike, they come in all colors sizes and age. Some are relatively new, others like, mine older. This gives the street a unique feel which I love. It is a quiet street and has inhabitants of all ages.

The name. The older houses in Hafnarfjörður all had a name, there simply weren´t any streets to speek of, so the houses had to have names. Sjónarhóll the name of my house, literally means a hill you can see far from. Sjónarhóll is also the Icelandic name of the house Lindgrens Pippi Longstocking lives. Therefore the only possible name for the airbnb profile was Villa Villekulla, the name of the house Pippi lives in.
