Pay attention to the reviews for your host. This is the important lesson I learned from this listing. What I should have heeded: "...the smell that hits you in your face as soon as you walk in..." "... the house was extremely dingy and dirty." "smelt kind of bad" "...a great entryway for mosquitos." "...a very strong odor that was present the entire time." "The bathroom (shared amongst all guests) was particularly filthy." "...standing pools of water with floating hairs and other debris..." "...smelled strongly of cat urine..." "...none of us wanted to use the shower without flip flops." A station wagon in the driveway was packed to the roof with stuff. The front door of the house wouldn't open all the way due to clutter behind it. The stairs to the upper floor were filthy. The bedroom was full of the hosts' possessions, piled on tables and stacked in bins. The photos don't show it, but the house is filled with clutter. I spent maybe 10-15 minutes in the house. Ben greeted me while I was still on the sidewalk. And he did not stop talking. He spoke about his life, his schooling, his work history, his AirBNB experience (he'd like to stop with AirBNB due to the personalities involved) and much else. He spoke about other people staying there and provided many reasons for the house being they way it was. After registering that Ben was providing a constant stream of excuses for why the place was so terrible, I walked out and booked a hotel. I've spent nights at far worse places: frat dorms, squats, heroin dens. But I was broke and those places were free.

Response from Oliver:
This review is as dishonest as it is mendacious. The guest cancelled the reservation without explanation after dropping off luggage and then going out for dinner, returning hours later after changing plans. He did not stay in our home nor go into any rooms/bathroom. He wrote an extortive letter several days threatening a poor review, and then culled through all our reviews and selectively picking out the worst comments he could find from all our listings. We stand by all our reviews... please read them fully. I will only say two things in response to this utterly false review: 1) We did have a cat, Oliver, who was sick for he last part of his life. Rather than put him down, we chose to take care of him until the end which posed certain challenges. Unfortunately, Oliver no longer is with us. And neither is any cat smell. 2) During both the Democratic Convention and the visit of the Pope last year we had a very full house. We chose not to raise our rates, and hosted as many visitors as practical. Naturally, the upstairs bathroom (all bedrooms are on the second floor) was uncharacteristically busy. This is a house in motion and we live here. Our home is clean. Read our reviews and see what people have to say about us.

Ben and Laura were the most friendly and accommodating hosts I've ever stayed with. My only complaint was the clutter in the room... I'm not sure if it was only temporary but the room was not as pictured.

Ben was a great host and this location was very convenient for my short stay. The house, unfortunately, isn't as advertised. We got a very cluttered room, and even though i have a cat myself, the smell that hits you in your face as soon as you walk in, isn't the most pleasant. We were really only there for a place to sleep and wash up for labor day weekend, spent most of our time outside the house. And Ben was very nice to stay up till the wee hours of the morning and make sure we were able to get into the house. Overall, it was a 'bleh' experience, but because the stay wasn't focused on staying in the house, it didn't bother us too much..

Room was ok, location wasn't the best but ok if you have a car. House was really cluttered with stuff, smelt kind of bad, but room was clean and nice.

The host is very nice and communicative. He talks with me a lot about Philadelphia and New York. And the place is not luxurious but cozy. The place is very close to Temple University and is convenient to all places especially if you have a car. The host upgraded my room the second night, and it became more comfortable.

Ben is a wonderful host. He told me a lot of stories about Philadelphia. The location is also great.

This house is home to a couple and a lovable cat, Oliver. We offer two or even three private bedrooms with additional sleeping downstairs if necessary (each bedroom should be booked individually or arrangements made prior to arrival). Espresso and cappuccino and American coffee is available all day, along with an ice machine for guest use. Fresh bread is made weekly and in warmer months, we have tomatoes from our garden. There are Indego bicycles for guest use. Cable with HBO, Starz and wifi and FAX machine are provided in this passively heated modern solar home. There is a private driveway available for parking.
