Galkadawala , was discovered in 2006, a land deforested, consumed and denuded by chena (slash and burn) cultivation. I decided to develop this land with retirement in mind and guided the process of nourishing, moulding and transforming the land back to a vibrant ecological habitat.
Galkadawala aim was to transform a barren patch to a jungle habitation; creating a haven for guests to enjoy in a setting where Man and Nature live in harmony with each other; in which animals, birds, reptiles and insects also have their due place. The story of success is vindicated as the area abounds with endemic creatures of all types, including 133 of the 453 avian species, 50 of the 230 species of butterflies, and 88 varieties of Ayurvedic medicinal plants of Sri Lanka which are recorded at Galkadawala.
Galkadawala, is constructed mainly by reusing “used building materials” like used timber, bricks, roofing tiles, even discarded industrial trunking.
By design, consumption of power has been reduced considerably by sensitive use of natural light and ventilation for cooling.
As there are Forest pathways and a network of lakes and irrigation canals surrounding the area it is ideal for trekking or bird watching.
The Culture and Heritage of Sri Lanka.
The wild life of Sri Lanka.
Interaction with guests
At meal times. Also if they need any site seeing tours to be organized. If they require any information about the sites, transportation, planning tours etc.
Other things to note
Galkadawala is a place for people who appreciate nature and who would like to truly experience it.
I would like my guest to appreciate the wild life and the peace and quite of Galkadawala and its surroundings.
2) Drivers/Guides cannot have meals with the guests or entertained in the bungalows.
3) We do not have a cooking facility for guests. The pantry in the 2 bungalows can be used by the guests to make their own tea or coffee or to heat up baby food but cannot be used to make their own meals. We serve vegetarian food but in a worse case if a guest brings fish or meat WE cook it for them (that would be in the main kitchen). Fish or meat cannot be cooked in the bungalows. The smell of meat or fish attracts various animals and insects. Hence this is for your own safety. Also the vegetarian guests maybe sensitive such smells in the bungalows. Kindly understand. Thank you.
I am the owner of Galkadawala Forest Lodge. After 25 years in the rat race, started what I always wanted to do .... a Lodge in the wilderness where one can enjoy nature as it is. I enjoy it very much, especially hosting others who wants to experience it. I love their company!
