Surrounded by the natural world and rustic simplicity, our 1790 farmhouse is just 15/20 minutes west of Northampton, Massachusetts. The charming Downstairs apartment is the antique part of the retreat and sleeps up to 4 guests. Private entrance. Two bedrooms, one a queen, and the other a double within a tiny room. A kitchen, 1 bathroom, tub and shower. All private and cozy. Views, gardens, hills and large sky! *Fireplace use at owner's discretion for small fee to help cover cost of wood.

The space

Sweeping sky and landscapes surround our historic 1790 farmhouse. Perfect for those seeking a quiet and inspiring getaway into nature only 15 mins from Smith College and downtown Northampton. Our electricity is 100% solar-powered. We use only chemical and fragrance free cleaning products and laundry detergents. Seventh Generation (and other eco-friendly) products are used here at Flower Hill Farm Retreat.

The Downstairs apartment is the antique part of the historic house offering stunning views through an eastern wall of windows. Off of the living room is a queen bedroom and an additional very small double bedroom. A full bathroom includes a fiberglass bathtub and shower. A simple vegetarian kitchen holds adequate cookware and dishes. Our nightly rate for the downstairs is 210 dollars for up to three guests.

The living room fireplace works and may be used seasonally, only on approval, for an extra fee to help cover cost of wood. Please ask about the fireplace if it is an important reason you are booking. We cannot promise ahead that it can be used.

Downstairs can be linked to the Studio or upstairs (see our other listings) or be a completely private space. We have added a dining room that is also a link from the downstairs to the upstairs and only for guests who rent entire retreat or up and downstairs apartments.

Guest access

Our gardens, fields and forests are open to our guests. We asked that you please respect wildlife and stay on paths. Please do not pick flowers or get too close to bird houses. Please, pets must remain on close leash when in gardens. On a trial basis we are allowing pets into the gardens. This is a wildlife habitat and we have many ground nesting birds and butterflies in various stages of growth.

For those wanting a retreat away from it all, we offer guided walks (forest & gardens) in meditation or learning mode. Also, Carol can drive you around the surrounding trustees of reservations and/or hilltowns to share the beauty, history, and interest of our area.

Interaction with guests

We are nearby if guests need anything. Carol offers guided walks about the gardens in search of wildlife — mostly birds and butterflies.

Summa summarum: Wonderful Lovely hostess, lovely apartment--magical fall colors, magical foggy October mornings, magical silent, full-moon nights. It's the third time we were at this absolutely beautiful place, and we'll be back as many times as Carol will have us!

We had a wonderful stay at beautiful Flower Hill Farm! Carol was a warm, responsive and welcoming host to me, my husband and our dog. She was flexible with our arrival time, she checked in after our first night to make sure we were comfortable and see if we needed anything, and she even offered to comfort our dog in case she became anxious while we were out. We felt very cared for and we especially appreciated Carol's willingness to accommodate our dog, too. The property and house themselves are beautiful. We stayed in the downstairs apartment. We loved the artistic touches throughout the house, the beautiful wood floors, and the natural light - not to mention the gardens! We were so glad to spend a weekend in this special place and would definitely come back!

This is a terrific place: beautiful, quiet, charming, well maintained, and interesting, filled as it is with Carol's art work. And Carol is a wonderful host doing everything she can think of to make your stay here pleasant. Her gardens are magnificent. We spent far more time just sitting outside enjoying the gardens, the view, and everything about the setting than we thought we would because most other things paled in comparison. The cottage is very convenient to Northampton and there are very nice general stores in nearby Williamsburg for quick trips for (excellent) pastries, coffees, and the like. Truly enjoyed our stay here and highly recommend it. Our dog, Pon, enjoyed it as well.

Response from Carol:
Thank you Jack! It was such a pleasure to meet you all. I hope to welcome you back sometime soon.

Carol was FANTASTIC. She was completely communicative and available via Text (my most preferred means of communication). She was willing to offer help/advice/suggestions regarding the area. She described and presented everything accurately, and we had a wonderful time! I would happily refer her to anyone looking for a quiet weekend getaway, and we plan to use her property again next summer!

Response from Carol:
Thank you for your kind words Logan. I look forward to welcoming you back next year. Take good care.

Host was responded in a very timely matter to any questions that we had prior to arrival. It was very hot during the weekend that we stayed so she was able to put in an air conditioning unit to keep us cool when we felt we needed. We stayed in the downstairs apartments. No other guests were in the adjacent or upstairs apartments so we had a very quiet stay (although I'm sure it still would have been very quiet). Kitchen has all the amenities that we needed. We felt very much at home.

It was a very serene and picturesque place. We thoroughly enjoyed the peace of Carol's farm retreat. She was a very thoughtful and kind host. We encourage those looking for a great place to get away to look no further. Flower Hill Retreat is a marvelous place to your bearings and your wires uncrossed.

Response from Carol:
Randy I am happy that you appreciated the serenity of Flower Hill. It was great to have you all here. Verizon is working on the wifi. Very slow with the strike. I am sorry if you lost connection and that I forgot to tell you to just turn the modem off for forty seconds and then back on.

I look forward to welcoming you to our rustic Flower Hill Farm Retreat! My life here is a work-in-progress and both the magical overgrown gardens and restored 1790 farmhouse offer charm and continued challenges. If you have nature deficit disorder, this is the place for you. On my website I have documented with photographs and listed by families over 50 species of butterflies and 70 plus bird species living or migrating thru our farm. There are enchanting encounters with mammals too. I am working on a book I call 'A Bestiary ~ Tales from a Wildlife Garden.'

I am an artist and farmer, who has given much of the last thirty years to caring for my twenty-one acre hillside in Western Massachusetts. My greatest joy in working with the land has been to see how my farm has become home to a diverse community of wildlife. Through painting, photography and writing, I try to capture the essence of what it is to be closely connected to nature. To cultivating that connection within the rich loam of this Western Massachusetts hillside and my mind.

On my blog Flower Hill Farm, I share the beauty of the wildlife surrounding my old farmhouse. In this way, I try to convey that with careful consideration of conservation and only using organic practices, while being a steward to the land, one can create a true sanctuary for native flora and fauna. And while living in this manner we can create a lush, green, and nourishing retreat for ourselves.
