Built in 1906 Moutoa House is a grand old Edwardian homestead set in approximately 20 acres in rural Foxton. With 6 acres of formal gardens Moutoa boasts sweeping lawns, beautiful flowers, established native trees, along with sparkling pool - you’ll easily find the perfect spot to relax.
Enjoy a romantic dinner in the formal dining room, a game of snooker on the full size competition billiard table with the open fires roaring - then retire to your private suite - complete with 4 poster bed.

The space
Moutoa House has an interesting history. Built by the local "flax king", Moutoa once boasted front gates adorned in gold leaf! It was sold to the Catholic Church and used as a nunnery and home for "wayward girls". Several years later it was bought from the Church by another member of the original family - who spent many years returning Moutoa back into a family home. The house remained within the family until we purchased the property in 2017. We are working hard to restore Moutoa to her former glory!

Guest access
When you stay at Moutoa you have access within the house to the billiard room (with full size billiard table); formal sitting room and dining room. Our family kitchen is available if you'd like to cook a meal or make a cup of tea or coffee. Outside, feel free to roam the grounds, take photos or take a swim in the pool.

Other things to note
As Moutoa is located in a rural area, cell phone reception is not great! We have a wifi network available for guest use, and this is especially good if your phone has wifi calling enabled. A landline is available if you need to make calls.

Location

Foxton, Manawatu-Wanganui, New Zealand

Foxton is a rural town on New Zealand's west coast, that grew to prominence in the late 1800s and early 1900s when the flax industry was at its peak. Once boasting a river port and train line, it was a bustling little town - for both those in the flax industry and others working in agriculture. When the flax industry declined, many workers moved away to find other employment, leaving agriculture to provide employment.

Foxton is a small town, however a supermarket and cafes are available.

Foxton Beach is approximately 10 kilometres away, and here you can enjoy the beach and Manawatu River estuary, which is home to several native species of bird life.
