The space
Visitors repeatedly say that Casa Sonrisa and our three other bamboo houses are exceptional, and have made it a Travelers Choice Winner 11 xs on TripAdvisor for 10 years running among TripAdvisor’s top 1% of hotels for families in all Costa Rica and Central America. Located on six acres in the midst of the rainforest, this off grid, bamboo house is right on beautiful Playa Pan Dulce, the area's premier beach and an easy walk to several others. Guests have compared it to having your own private nature preserve, as it is situated in the midst of wildlife coming and going. It is remote and secluded, yet not isolated; comfortable yet unspoiled. It lets you: experience the true Costa Rica, one of the most amazing areas on earth; relax on the beach; surf uncrowded waves; commune with monkeys; and enjoy countless natural wonders. All while staying secure and comfortable. At Casa Sonrisa the ocean waves lull you to sleep and the roar of the howler monkeys awaken you to a glorious sunrise over the Golfo Dulce (Sweet Gulf). A gorgeous, pristine beach is a short stroll across the property, and the rainforest and wildlife are all around. If you love nature in all its wild beauty, you'll love Casa Sonrisa.
The house itself is a simple, yet comfortable handcrafted house. The view looks out at the magnificent Golfo Dulce. From your porch watch scarlet macaw fly by and monkeys swing past in the trees. Or venture out to marvelous waterfalls, deep-sea waters, rainforest trails and more breathtaking scenery and unspoiled sand and surf.
Casa Sonrisa is surrounded by a tropical paradise of fragrant, flowering plants like ginger, halyconia, and hibiscus; and fruit trees, with delicious succulent mango, lime, breadfruit, pineapple, papaya and banana there for the picking (depending on the season).
This off-grid house is handcrafted by owner Kirk, who leaves no detail overlooked. The house offers:

•This flows into an ample dining area with handcrafted hardwood table and chairs for spacious dining.

Where you’ll be

Matapalo, Cabo Matapalo, Osa Peninsula, Puntarenas,, Costa Rica

The Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica's "little Amazon" and Matapalo, its costal edge where our houses are located, are some of the last, unspoiled regions in Costa Rica, if not the planet. The Osa harbors a diversity of habitats and species unheard of elsewhere for an area of its size (less than half of Rhode Island). Between two to three percent of the flora of the Osa exists nowhere else on earth. It contains 13 major ecosystems, including rainforests, lowland forests, cloud forests, mangrove and freshwater swamps, lagoons, beaches, and coral reefs. Jacques Cousteau called its magnificent Golfo Dulce (sweet gulf) the most pristine of the world's four tropical fjords. Home to vast Corcovado National Park, known as the "crown jewel" of Costa Rica, the area (including our neighborhood) is teeming with life.
We are located in a premier spot, close to are good restaurants, fun tours, yoga classes and gorgeous hikes.

I am the proud owner of Casa Bambu Beach House Resort, a multiple TripAdvisor award winning property. Since 1994 we have had the pleasure of hosting guests from all over the world in our bamboo houses and seen many return multiple times to enjoy this unique, amazing place. Twenty seven years ago, while visiting friends on the Osa Peninsula, I found six acres of overgrown cow pasture by the Golfo Dulce, cleared it of brambles and weeds, and began to transform it. With neighbors, we planted 1,000 trees (now part of the monkey trail) and built Casa Bambu with the help of local friends. I completed a second bamboo house, Casa Linda, in September, 2002; a third, Casa Piña, in August, 2003; and a fourth, Casa Sonrisa, in December, 2007. All the houses are solar-powered with artesian wells, beautiful tropical yards and on a pristine beach. Back in the U.S. I've been a "green" builder and home designer in Austin, TX. The houses are ultra efficient - utilizing passive solar techniques, proper siting and other applications that conserve energy while providing comfortable shelter.
