Quain overlooks the historic market town of Todmorden in the Upper Calder Valley in the South Pennines. 'Tod' is known for its pluralist culture, vintage antiques, and walking and cycling on the moors or 'tops'. Quain has a sister cafe called Kava. Both are run as a home from home or 'third place'. In between nestle the Rochdale Canal and The Golden Lion pub venue. Tod library is opposite Kava and the railstation is just around the corner. Manchester Victoria is just 25 minutes away.

The space

Cock Pit is the oldest part of Todmorden made up of a group of Weaver's Cottages facing each other across cottage gardens and perched just above the river and canal basin in the centre of the town with views across the Calder Valley. Cock Pit itself is car free and with a footpath across it. Parking is available just below on Longfield Lane directly behind the iconic awarding winning Golden Lion pub which is originally a coach house built at around the same time.

I am a Londoner currently working in Naples with a hometown called Asiago in the Italian alps. The Asiago plateau or altopiano is a remarkable limestone island in the alps which is twice the size of Malta. I strongly recommend the writing of local author Mario Rigoni Stern because he captures a heady mix of real life, history, mountain culture and philosophy. In fact we have named our apartment there after a novel of his that features our maternal grandfather Nicola Zanotelli who was the landlord of a travelers hotel called the Ghertele in the Altopiano near the old pre-WWI border with Austria. Rigoni Stern's stripped down hyper realist style makes him a forerunner to Knausgaard. Although I love the UK I need my regular fix of pine scent, that special hug from relatives and our dry banter in Venetian dialect. Asiago is a holiday resort for Italians so I look forward to sharing its secrets with what my relatives call the 'Transalpini' from across the alps or where ever you may be coming from. Because I miss Asiago so much when I am in the UK and because I left my heart in Manchester in my late teens and twenties (cue the music of Joy Division and New Order and the culture they sprouted from) I have chosen Todmorden for my home in England. Tod is nestled in the Three Valleys or Upper Calder Valley of Calderdale in West Yorkshire but it is only 25 minutes by train from Manchester city centre. What's it like? Try this. Imagine the Northern Quarter in Manchester set in the Highlands of Scotland and seeping in kindness and creativity, with much cheaper prices! In Asiago and Todmorden there is something for everyone who appreciates that the best things in life cannot be reduced to commodities.
