Other things to note

Languedoc-Roussillon is perfectly positioned between the Mediterranean to the east where the beautiful sandy beaches provide long days by the sea, and the Pyrenees to the west, which offer a wealth of walking and cycling opportunities, not to mention skiing in the winter!

This region is a delight; the Conflent valley provides lush green scenery, with Mount Canigou dominating the skyline and the Pyrenees visible in the distance. You can be swimming in the sea in the morning, and hiking in the mountains in the afternoon. There are even thermal hot springs, so if you would like to combine the two activities we can suggest a hike AND a swim in the mountains! It really does offer you everything!

There is a lake in the local town of Vinca, with beaches, from which you can swim, sail or wind-surf, or you could just visit the popular open air swimming pool in Vernet les Bains.

Weather: This area benefits from being in the sunniest region of France, and enjoy warm, sunny weather from March all the way through to October. November and December are cooler but still with sunshine. January, February and March are great skiing months (1hr drive to the ski resorts).

The Pyrenees Orientales has much to offer art lovers; the world famous Pablo Casals music festival is held in and around Prades (only 15 minutes drive away) during the summer and is attended by world famous musicians. Perpignan hosts “Jazzebre” an international jazz festival in October. This area has also been the home to many famous artists including Picasso, Matisse, Chagall and surrealist artist Salvador Dali who declared Perpignan railway station “the centre of the universe”. You can see examples of their work on show in Ceret, Perpignan and the picturesque seaside resort of Collioure.
Vernet les Bains

Vernet les Bains is a charming historic town situated in the foothills of the Pyrenees. It is an ideal centre for holidaymakers all year round as the village enjoys a wonderful climate, with an average of 300 days of sunshine each year. It is set in a sheltered valley in the foothills of Mount Canigou, which rises to a height of 2,785 meters. Rudyard Kipling praised Canigou as “a magician among mountains”. The town is situated at an altitude of 650m and is dominated by the restored castle and church of St. Saturnin. Guided tours are available during the summer.

As a Spa town Vernet les Bains offers a professional spa/therapy centre with saunas, steam room, Jacuzzi, aqua gym and massage, where you can treat yourself to a day of pampering. The Spa was often visited by the fashionable rich at the turn of the last century.

Vernet is one of Frances “Villages Fleuris” and boasts beautiful, flowery parks and tree lined squares. Visit the village arboretum with more than 2000 identified tree specimens. The arboretum is open daily and is free.

Shopping in Vernet is easy, with a wide range of amenities arranged around the village square including a variety of café bars and restaurants to suite all tastes and pockets. There are also the usual boulangeries, butchers, chemists, newsagents, post office, gift shops and banks with cash dispensers. Markets are held on the square three times a week (Mon, Thurs and Sat), selling local produce such as cheeses, wines, saucisson, olives as well as wonderful fresh fruit and vegetables. There is a supermarket 1km from the centre of Vernet with everything you could need and there are two vey good larger supermarkets in nearby Prades (Super U and Intermarché).

Vernet has a helpful Tourist Office on the village square where you can get information about the many local festivals and activities. It is open all year round.

Festivals include “La Belle Époque”; this festival is celebrated in May each year and celebrates the time when from 1850 through to the first world war, Vernet was visited by crowds of international aristocrats. There are still signs of the grandeur of the times in the Casino and the Grand Hotel du Portugal (both buildings well worth a visit). During the long weekend festival the locals dress in historical costumes of the day and parade through the streets of Vernet and in the gardens overlooking the Casino.

Festival de la Saint Saturnin is a week of festivities held in November in honour of the patron saint of Vernet les Bains, St Saturnin.

The Canigou Race, not for the faint hearted is held on the first Sunday in August each year. The race is a circular 30km race to the top of Mount Canigou and back. The event was inspired by runners in the 20th century who would race to the summit to cut blocks of ice that they could sell in the market. It was obviously the fastest runners who had the most ice to sell on their return! There are many other events in the village that run in conjunction with the race.

Other activities in Vernet include a large swimming pool area with both indoor and outdoor pools. Tennis courts, boules area and children’s playground. A popular activity is to take a trip in a 4x4 up Mount Canigou.

Vernet-les-bains is a great location for exploring the hills around Canigou and Mount Canigou itself. It was great to stay in Julie's place and have such easy access to the market (literally on the front door step). The house itself is very practical: nice open layout on the ground floor, well-equipped kitchen, great to be able to sit outside the back in the evening and good to have two bathrooms. All in all an excellent place to stay!

The house is very comfortable, well furnished with everything we needed. The terrace is lovely, shady in the morning but we enjoyed beeakfast there. It's definitely in the midst of the main town square but noise not a problem & fun to be able to go just across the square for a coffee or an aperitif. Vernet is pleasant and there are many interesting day trips.

Julie User Profile

We, Jonathan and Julie, have been living in France since 2001 and we are still very much in love with this stunningly beautiful region of France. We are married with 4 children and 4 grand children. Spare time is mostly taken up with renovating our derelict house. The apartment advertised in Ria-Sirach as "lovely apartment - large terrace" is the first part of the renovation to be finished and we are very proud of how successful it is.

Our favourite pass-times are eating, drinking, gardening, looking after our 4 chickens and "relaxing". If you get to know us you will realise that "relaxing" is meant to be a joke, it is something that we aspire to in the future.

We help other local holiday home owners to manage their houses, we have a selection of properties that we manage from a one bedroom apartment to 5 bedroomed villas. We have an amazing team of house-keepers, gardeners and pool maintenance people to look after you. If you need anything during your stay in any of the properties we have the expertise to help.

Feel free to contact us with your questions and if you need help in finding the house that is right for you.
