King Street

Foodies will absolutely adore Bowen Hills, as the neighborhood is absolutely stuffed with food options, from classy upscale restaurants to inexpensive food trucks. Anything you could possibly desire can be found at the Brisbane Showgrounds, a 5 minutes walk from the apartment. Head to trendy King Street to visit some of the top rated restaurants, eateries, bistros, and cafes in all of Brisbane. From wood fired Italian pizza to world-class sushi and plump dumplings, King Street restaurants are serving up the finest cuisines you could be craving.

Welcome to Bowen Hills

If casual, eat-as-you-go food stalls are more your speed, Welcome To Bowen Hills is the place to be. It’s a permanent food truck hub with a rotating assortment of carts and stalls, featuring an indoor/outdoor bar and enormous, 1000 person beer garden. In the outdoor sections, you can meander through lush hanging plants and boardwalk-style signage, stopping to munch on tacos or finger foods or whole entrees at a table along the way. Ekka milk bar is an awesome base in the complex, perfect for beer lovers with 68 different pints on tap. If you’re more comfortable with cocktails, explore the space to find the secret gin bar. Welcome to Bowen Hills is the perfect place to bring a date, meet locals relaxing on the weekend, or marvel at the some of Brisbane’s best as a solo traveler.

Chinatown

You could eat for days on end on King Street and Welcome to Bowen Hills without repeating a meal, but if authentic Asian cuisine is what you’re seeking, take the ten or fifteen minute walk over to Chinatown. It’s the hub of Brisbane’s vibrant Asian community, with street signs written in both Engish and Chinese. Though Chinatown Mall on Duncan Street is the heart of the district, the area has grown remarkably in recent years and now stretches down the full three square blocks between Alfred and McLachlan Streets and Gipps and Constance Streets. Get your dumpling fix and chow down on Chinese food, or explore Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, or Indonesian options. Once you’re well-fed, browse the market stalls for trinkets and souvenirs and some more Asian snacks.

Entertainment

Brisbane Showgrounds

Brisbane Showgrounds has a lot more to offer than food. The Showgrounds have been a meeting place and iconic landmark for nearly 150 years. Aiming to be “the new heart of Brisbane,” the Showgrounds are a meeting place and entertainment center for locals and tourists alike. You can find anything from vegan food festivals to monster truck showdowns here, with events and attractions for people of all ages and from any country. Come for a performance or a show and stay for the beautiful environment, the endless food options, and the bars!

James Street Market

James Street is another has-it-all avenue for food and entertainment options. Much like King Street, it’s well set up for an afternoon of shopping, or to head out for lunch or dinner. There are tons of new gym facilities, as well as specialty shops like furniture stores and baby supplies. If you’re looking for a hairdresser or nail salon, James Street is a good place to look.

The James Street Market is also a wonderful place to stroll through, where you can get fresh fruits and vegetables or a hot lunch from a food stall.

Little Stanley Street

Little Stanley Street is full of boutiques, chic shops, and restaurants with a whole host of highly rated international cuisines. Stroll down the strip for some jewelry shopping, and stop into a bar or cafe for a snack, or pick up some high end fashion to wear to a critically acclaimed restaurant for a formal meal.

Wheel of Brisbane

There’s so much to see in Bowen Hills—why not get a birds eye view? The Wheel of Brisbane is an iconic Bowen Hills landmark, adorning the skyline on the South Bank. The Wheel rises a spectacular 60 meters above ground level in an enclosed, air-conditioned gondola that seats 8 people. From the top, you’ll get a 360-degree panoramic view of Brisbane city. The can’t-miss-it experience is truly breathtaking.

Queensland Performing Arts Centre

Also known as QPAC, the Queensland Performing Arts Center is the heart of the city’s art and performance scene, hosting over 1000 performances yearly in four indoor theaters as well as its outdoor spaces. QPAC has hosted some of the world’s leading artists and companies, including The Royal Ballet, the American Ballet Theatre, and the Hamburg Ballet, as well as the Hamburg Philharmonic and the Hamburg State Opera.

Outside of opera and ballet, the Queensland Performing Arts Center is also famous for musicals, theater, comedy, and contemporary music. Check out their schedule to catch one of their impressive performances, or to see what kind of shows and programs they’re hosting or funding outside of the center.

Culture

Queensland Heritage Register

Bowen Hills, and Brisbane more broadly, are culture-packed areas full of an impressive number of sites that are protected under the Queensland Heritage Register. To be included in the Register, a site has to demonstrate rare or endangered characteristics of Queensland’s rich cultural heritage, or to contribute to the overall understanding of Queensland history. Sites might be aesthetically significant, or associated with important communities, individuals, organizations, or cultural groups that themselves represent key moments or evolutions in Queensland’s history. To be registered as a Heritage Site is a meaningful testament, and so it is incredible there are at least six just in the neighborhood surrounding Bowen Hills.

Grey Street

Grey Street is to Brisbane’s culture what King Street is to Brisbane’s food. From visual to performance art, from science to history museums, you can spend hours and days on the boulevard immersing yourself in the city’s most impressive institutions. Catch one of the 1200 performances the Queensland Performing Arts Centre has to offer, whether classical music, comedy, or dance. Ogle the art at the Gallery of Modern Art, or spend some contemplative time at the State Library or the Sciencentre.

The Old Museum

Like the rest of Bowen Hills and Brisbane City, the Old Museum has gone through many changes to become the venue you can visit today. Originally called the Exhibition Building and Concert Hall the Old Museum was originally built for the Queensland National Agricultural and Industrial Association. It then became the home of the Queensland Museum, until that museum moved elsewhere. The Old Museum now houses the Queensland Youth Orchestras, the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra, and the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as a whole host of sports and arts organizations who use the building for practice, performance, and administrative space.
The uniquely beautiful and highly detailed exterior of the building is no less fascinating than its history, and its role as a "structure and engineering feat" has caused it to be named one of the structural icons of Queensland.

Gallery of Modern Art

The modernistic Gallery of Modern Art building is full of Australian art spanning the last 50 years from the 1970s until the present day. The museum hosts a range of different exhibits in a variety of mediums, from painting and sculpture to photography and film. Go at 11am, 1pm, or 2pm for a free guided museum tour!
