Overall, I have to say that the space was very lovely. The room itself was very spacious and it came with a nice en-suite bathroom. I think this is the perfect place for someone staying short term (will explain later). I also have to base my review solely on the room itself, as M…

Response from Maya & Ivo:
Cameron, we are very sorry to hear that you had a bad experience. Unfortunately, you gave us no indication that this was the case, so we could not tell that you had had such an uncomfortable stay. Hopefully this message will rectify any misunderstandings. Access to other areas of the house: We don’t mention anywhere on our airbnb profile that specific areas of the house are in fact accessible. If they were we would have indicated this. As a result of this misunderstanding, we will make sure that it is clear that the living room is private. To say that this policy is appalling is over-reacting; we ourselves have stayed in airbnbs where house areas are restricted. There is a completely valid reason why we keep the living room locked when we are away from home; it doubles as Ivo’s study where he works. No-one has complained previously about this policy - I’m sure you can understand that it’s up to hosts to set their own house rules; it’s fundamental that airbnb hosts’ make their own decisions in this area; in fact we’re surprised that you tried to gain access to the room when it was clearly locked and off limits. The reality is that it’s hard to trust complete strangers and this trust is developed and strengthened over a period of time. One hears a lot of horror stories about rooms being trashed, porn films being shot, and all kinds of illegal behaviour happening whilst hosts are away. I’m sure you can appreciate that a level of caution is wholly necessary when welcoming guests into one’s house. Re: the clarity of communication that you felt was lacking. In terms of the Amazon package you left around, the package was opened and a shoe insole was left in the living room along with the packaging. Maya sent a polite request via email not to leave rubbish around; it’s a shame this was interpreted as poor communication when, once again, she was merely attempting to define the house rules. Whilst cleaning the room we couldn’t help but notice that you failed to clean skid marks left on the toilet bowl with the toilet brush that we provided. This is basic good hygiene and we were surprised at your standards in this respect. It’s a pity that in your review you never mentioned that we gave you a further discount on top of the discount that we normally offer for monthly stays. We also gave you a cooked brunch as a welcome on the day you arrived, and on a couple of other occasions Maya offered you dessert which you gladly accepted. In addition, some careless behaviour on your part caused some damage to our table lamp which we managed to repair - consequently we did not charge you for the damage you caused. You have to accept responsibility for your behaviour and respect the rules and standards of whichever airbnb you happen to be staying in.

The decorators opened the doors to let me in. The entire hallway was being re-painted with my room all the way up the top. I was flabbergasted not to be told that up front. Host was unwilling to reschedule the works and told me that "other guests were ok with the works to the ho…

Response from Maya & Ivo:
To clear up the facts: We employed ONE decorator to repaint the hallway that leads to our attic room that we rent out on the top floor. No work was being done inside the room itself. We previously had other guests who were completely sympathetic to the situation, because once the stairs have been ascended, the guests enjoy the privacy and comfort of the cosy ensuite room. We have stayed in hotels that were undergoing refurbishment and at the time we accepted that it was work that needed doing in the hotel. The decorator opened the door simply because he was closest to the door; however Maya was right behind him. Mateusz displayed an aggressive and very unpleasant attitude from the moment he walked through the front door. He said he was "super-hyper-sensitive" to paint and that that sensitivity extended to odourless paint too (the decorator was using odourless paint for the job in our house). Mateusz said that he worked as a furniture maker, so it was very surprising that he couldn't bear to see any paint. He was also very concerned that his £600 coat would get stained, although we had been walking up and down the stairs without any difficulty. Our mistake was to fail to inform Mateusz that work was happening in the hallway, because we thought that guests would understand that the work did not affect the condition of the room itself in any way. We apologised to Mateusz for this and we understood his frustration at the situation, but it seemed that he overreacted in a very exaggerated manner making the situation worse than what it actually was. As a result we felt very uncomfortable to share our home with such an irate and difficult guest and we suggested he find somewhere else to stay. After this cancellation we had other people come and stay straight away and they didn't mind the refurbishment work at all.
