Cameron, we are very sorry to hear that you had a bad experience. Unfortunately, you gave us no indication that this was the case, so we could not tell that you had had such an uncomfortable stay. Hopefully this message will rectify any misunderstandings.
Access to other areas of the house:
We don’t mention anywhere on our airbnb profile that specific areas of the house are in fact accessible. If they were we would have indicated this.
As a result of this misunderstanding, we will make sure that it is clear that the living room is private.
To say that this policy is appalling is over-reacting; we ourselves have stayed in airbnbs where house areas are restricted.
There is a completely valid reason why we keep the living room locked when we are away from home; it doubles as Ivo’s study where he works. No-one has complained previously about this policy - I’m sure you can understand that it’s up to hosts to set their own house rules; it’s fundamental that airbnb hosts’ make their own decisions in this area; in fact we’re surprised that you tried to gain access to the room when it was clearly locked and off limits. The reality is that it’s hard to trust complete strangers and this trust is developed and strengthened over a period of time. One hears a lot of horror stories about rooms being trashed, porn films being shot, and all kinds of illegal behaviour happening whilst hosts are away. I’m sure you can appreciate that a level of caution is wholly necessary when welcoming guests into one’s house.
Re: the clarity of communication that you felt was lacking.
In terms of the Amazon package you left around, the package was opened and a shoe insole was left in the living room along with the packaging. Maya sent a polite request via email not to leave rubbish around; it’s a shame this was interpreted as poor communication when, once again, she was merely attempting to define the house rules.
Whilst cleaning the room we couldn’t help but notice that you failed to clean skid marks left on the toilet bowl with the toilet brush that we provided. This is basic good hygiene and we were surprised at your standards in this respect.
It’s a pity that in your review you never mentioned that we gave you a further discount on top of the discount that we normally offer for monthly stays. We also gave you a cooked brunch as a welcome on the day you arrived, and on a couple of other occasions Maya offered you dessert which you gladly accepted.
In addition, some careless behaviour on your part caused some damage to our table lamp which we managed to repair - consequently we did not charge you for the damage you caused.
You have to accept responsibility for your behaviour and respect the rules and standards of whichever airbnb you happen to be staying in.
