About this listing
Domaine Thomson is a lovely 1830s house in a small village in the Ariege region of the Pyrenees, a 15 minute drive from Mirepoix, ville Cathar, and 1 hours` drive from Carcassonne & Toulouse.
Large pool, free wifi, 4 bedrooms, all mod cons.
Domaine Thomson is situated in a rural village which is truly `oldy world France at its best`. It is a great place to `get away from it all`, without being too `far from the madding crowd`.
Domaine Thomson is run as a Bed and Breakfast for most of the year, with room prices from 65€, or guests may rent the entire house as a gite/self catering holiday home during the summer. The house is let on a weekly basis during the summer months, from a Saturday to Saturday, price 1400€ - 1600€. It is possible to rent the house during other periods of the year, contact owner for details.
The house boasts two double ensuite bedrooms, (each contains one double and one single bed); one family room sleeping 4 (double bed and two single bunk style beds); and one double room, a `hollywood style` double bathroom. A large outdoor swimming pool, free wifi, the beautifully restored c.1830 farmhouse in traditional comfortable style.
Nestling amongst rolling hills, this is an area of superb walking, birdwatching, cycling, horse-riding, all literally from the doorstep. The wild flowers in this region are many, and from February to June most noticeable are the wild orchids that grow everywhere. Within this area is an abundance of Cathar Castles and Mirepoix is a very fine example of a medieval town. One hour from Engravies by car one has the choice of two ski resorts and also rock/ice climbing challenges.
The owner will be happy to advise on places to visit and routes to take for walking or cycling.
The house can accommodate a maximum of 12.
Guests have full use of the pool, garden, barbeque and facilities within the house. Private parking. In winter months fuel and firewood are included for the central heating and open fire.
Interaction with guests
I, the owner, am very happy to give advice about places to visit, give information about local village fetes that are being held, or to help with any difficulties they may have. When the house is rented out, I am nearby to maintain the garden and swimming pool, not in an intrusive way, but available should needs arise.
Other things to note
In the summer months there are many fetes in local villages which are really worth going to. The owner will give details of any events taking place.
This is an area of many sporting events, we have several cycling races, one held the last Saturday in June each year - ariegeclosportif plus runs and walks, with either road or vtt races that are always popular to participate in.
There are regular weekly walking or cycling events in off season months guests may participate in.
There is also possibility of joining the chasse(hunt), the season for this is September until the end of January. This would need to be requested in advance.
Also worth noting that excursions are organised to hear the `brame` - the sound of the stags rutting at dusk and into the evening is something not to be missed. (mid-September until mid-October).
- House guests are expected to treat the house and garden areas, as they would their own - with respect and care.
- Dogs are not permitted.
- No smoking indoors please.
- No more than 12 guests may stay.

I run a small chambre d`hotes/bed and breakfast, open all year, and will always welcome guests warmly and help with the planning of their itinerary if required. I offer evening meals, which need to be requested in advance, not obligatory to eat here. A large pool from mid-May to Mid-Otober, nice garden great for relaxing in. The house is comfortable furnished and is very much a family home, ideal for mixed generations, small children, young adults, and older visitors. There is NOT disabled access to the bedrooms, but it is suitable for people with reduced mobility. i.e. people recovering from hip, or knee transplants, etc. Two of the bedrooms are ensuite, and the family suite has its own large bathroom. This is a lovely area, and I have a lot of local knowledge, and am always happy to explain places to visit, local history, etc. In the garden - which is registered as a refuge with LPO (sistered to RSPB) I have abundant wild orchids flowering between beginning March until the end of June, swallows nesting, insect life, my own vegetable garden which makes me self-sufficient all year. My evening meals only use my own home grown fruit and vegetables. The house is centrally heated, also a large wood burning fire in the sitting room, so that in the winter months you are ensured a cosy enjoyment of the house. Lots of childrens toys for all ages. I have maps of the local area, and welcome cyclists and walkers, and can give advice on where to go. I love meeting people and sharing my home and village life with them.
