We loved Marcia's place, on a lively, leafy, friendly street in a county town a half hour from Lisbon, but feels much further away! Hosts so welcoming! Very old and charming house, everything you need, including room for kids if you have them. Great restaurant next door, another coffee/ snack shop across the street, and even a little tiny grocery a few doors down, and a butcher! Vendas de Azeitao is close to so many things, mountains, markets, beaches, wineries, also nice to just hang around and decompress. Incredible art-filled palace Bacalhoa only 10 minutes walk from here, and you can get a tour of the winery (including samples) and the palace and grounds — most highly recommended.

We spent two wondeful weeks in this really beautiful area - the house is nice & old & charming and you find everything you need to cook & there´s also some toys for the kids to play with... Márcia & José are really nice and helpful and the neighbours on the street which has a small grocery store and two cafés & a restaurant are very friendly! Azeitao is a good spot/starting point for trips to the wonderful beaches like Arrabida & Galapinhos (20/30 minutes by car) & to the mercado do livramento in Setubal to buy great food. Lisbon isn´t too far away and it´s also nice to visit the beaches on the westcoast for some higher waves ; ) (The one thing that wasn´t clear to us, was that the second bedroom doesn´t have any window - so we took one of the single beds to the main room with the double bed and the crib and all four of us (two adults & two kids) slept there, because we thought it was nicer with all of us having windows...)

This little house is very old and charming and very good value for money. Marcia and Jose met us with a warm welcome and two sets of keys as well as useful information about the area. Some useful notes for future guests - the sleeping arrangements mean this is very well suited to a family or perhaps to a group of close friends who are happy to sleep in a dormitory- style arrangement - this is because the twin room is a large windowless box-room of sorts with twin beds in it - but it's part of the main bedroom with no door - so although it is described as independent, it's really the same room. It is a lovely big room though, with a small double bed in it - and a baby's cot!- two windows (a good breeze when you want one) and a walk-in wardrobe with lots of room for clothes. Marcia and Jose provided a huge pile of towels and lots of bedding. Because we were a couple with one friend joining us, we decided to take her mattresses through to the large kitchen/living room to give us all some privacy. The dining kitchen is very large with a huge table and long benches - you could entertain a dozen people without difficulty. Watch out for stubbing your toes on the legs of the benches though, it took us a couple of days to get used to it. The wooden floor has a few nailheads sticking up slightly so do wear flip flops or slippers in the house. Watch out of you have small children crawling around. The hot water is heated by gas which you light each time you want to use it, so there is always plenty hot water. The bathroom is downstairs in the ex-barbershop part of the house. The steps down are different heights so take care when going to the loo in the night after a few glasses of wine :-) It reminds me of a farmhouse that an elderly person might have lived in, full of quirky ornaments, old fashioned and charming. You can hang clothes out to dry on a line outside the kitchen window. There are some little grocery stores nearby and a few cafes but you need a car to get anywhere significant. Sesimbra is a nice little town about 25 mins away by car. There are big supermarkets in the way. We highly recommend Casa Mateus for a special night out - go at least once, it is not cheap but everything is so incredibly tasty. We went twice!! Tell Pedro that Nicola and Chris recommended him. He might remember us.
