Spacious, elegant, newly refurbished traditional riad on a quiet street in the heart of the medina. 10 minutes walk from the beach, sea view from upper terrace. Open log fire. Suitable for groups, couples and families.

The space

Nestling down a quiet alleyway within the walls of the medina, two minutes walk from the bustling souks, outdoor cafes and candlelit restaurants, and just seven minutes from the beach is Dar Ettouahen, the 'Mill House'.

Cosy enough for two, but well-equipped and spacious enough for a whole family or group of friends, Dar Ettouahen is an elegant, light and airy riad, with traditional stone arches, tadelakt (marble-dust walled) bathrooms, tiled floors, high thuya wood ceilings and an open log fireplace.

On the roof is a large sheltered terrace with views over the medina, and from a second smaller upper terrace, you can look out to the sea and watch the waves crashing on the rocks below.

Guest access

Guests have the entire house to themselves. The most common noises are the sea waves and sea gulls.

Interaction with guests

During your stay, you will be looked after by Fouad, our local caretaker who is there to make sure that you have a great stay. Not only is he able to help with any problems you may have (e.g. finding a doctor), but he can also give lots of advice and organise excursions for you, including transport to the airport or your next destination. He will meet you when you arrive in Essaouira, take you to the house, and lend you a local mobile phone with which you can call him if you need him during your stay. He is kind, honest and very reliable.

The house is cleaned weekly and in between guests. Khadisha, our excellent cook, is also available to make delicious breakfasts and traditional Moroccan dinners for you at very reasonable prices. These meals are often described by guests as a highlight! She will also provide additional cleaning and washing for you on request for a small charge.

Other things to note

We provide stair gates, a high chair, a travel cot (with additional mattress and cot bedding) and a baby bath. We are also able to organise babysitting during the evenings.

The Raid is big and with a breathtaking view. We were expecting a cleaner house (the bedrooms were a bit dusty) and the toilets smelled funny. We had to ask them to come back and clean. Toilets paper weren't enough for not even a day. The location is very convenient and the furniture very nice and traditional. Overall a good experience but it's important to improve the cleaning because it can affect one's experience.

Dar Ettouahan is as described - a characterful house in the medina area. As a party of two we more than appreciated the spacious accommodation the house provides. Equally we could see its potential for larger groups. There are interesting seating and relaxation areas on the ground and first floors with terraces on the third level - two of which really do offer sea views. The provision for in-house breakfast at a nominal rate was an added bonus. Being only two in number, we did not require an evening meal but could imagine the added benefit to a larger party. Preliminary booking arrangements were efficient, informative and carried out in practice - we were met at the airport by a taxi as prearranged and at the medina walls to be escorted to the house. Being festival week one added bonus was the water pressure pump which kicks in when the water pressure drops across the city - needed & welcomed. Just be aware that provision of towels is at a basic level of one per week. You may need to consider other usage such as the beach & swimming. Similarly you need to bring or purchase toiletries such as shower gel & toilet paper - but no issue with local shops close by. As two friends we felt more than safe in the locality but streets are narrow & winding in the medina. Depending on the time of year & daylight hours, a torch might be advised. Overall this was a positive experience in a great city - relax & enjoy

We couldn't rave about this AirBnB more. The house is fantastic; it's right in the medina so a short walk to everything you might want to see, plus restaurants, etc, and the house itself is perfect. It's spacious, with plenty of comfortable areas to lounge around, both inside and out. The bedrooms were comfy, there are bathrooms throughout the house, and everything was very clean. It's also a very tastefully and comfortably decorated house. Johan and Kaylin were very helpful right up until our arrival, at which point Fouad takes over as on-site help. Fouad and Kadisha were also both wonderful and helpful. All in all this is a great house to stay in, and run by very helpful people who helped make our trip streamlined and hassle free, even when we encountered our own hiccups! Thanks for a great holiday.

We're a family of five with three young children. We bought the riad in 2006. We love Essaouira and we go there several times a year. The rest of the time we rent out the house. It's great to talk to our guests about Essaouira and Morocco, and it's really nice to see so many guests wanting to come back to our house.
