Enjoy exploring the Yorkshire Dales, wandering around Masham, relaxing in the garden by the river. Our cottage has exposed stone, lots of old beams and feels comfortable and spacious. It's perfect whether you want to retreat from the world or explore. We provide plenty of information & ideas to help you make the most of your time here.

The space

The cottage is part of a building that dates back to 1704, and which was a former corn mill. The cottage is quirky and has a sense of history with flagged stone floors (carpet in the lounge), and beautiful wooden beams in the bedrooms. The cottage sleeps 4 people very comfortably, 6 if you want to add two children and use a sofa bed in the lounge - but it will be "cosy". The cottage is simply but comfortably furnished.

Outside, the garden overlooks the river and you can still see the old mill race. It's a very peaceful, hidden spot and yet only two minutes' walk into Masham market square with its independent shops, cafes and pubs.

Inside the cottage there are plenty of books, games to play and jigsaws. This is an ideal place to come to relax, recuperate and feel re-inspired. You can choose to be quiet and contemplative, indulge your artistic streak, go out for bracing walks in awe-inspiring countryside or while away the hours in one of Masham’s excellent pubs.

Guest access

Guests can park next to the cottage and store cycles etc at the side. They can enjoy sitting in the garden (there are two so there's always somewhere to sit in peace), and paddling/swimming in the river.

We live right next door so we're generally (often away in summer months) on hand if you need anything but will otherwise leave you in peace. The garden is shared between ourselves (myself, husband teenage daughter & 3 spaniels) and our guests but it's large with an area to the front and back so there's always a quiet corner somewhere.

Interaction with guests

The cottage is completely self-contained with its own front door. We live next door so we're there (except when on holiday...) when needed or for suggestions on what to do, but we give guests plenty of space so they can enjoy staying here without having to speak to us if they don't want to!

Other things to note

PLEASE NOTE: We only take bookings for THREEE nights or more over bank holiday weekends and FOUR nights or more during the second half of JULY and all of AUGUST. We regret we cannot take a booking just for August Bank Holiday - we would prefer to take one week bookings only over that period.

We've got masses of information about the local area and Yorkshire Dales, books and lists of suggested places to visit.

We do have wifi internet but with such an old property and thick walls, can't guarantee it 100% all the time! It's good enough for us to work from home but beware occasional gremlins!

We live next door to the cottage and have three springer spaniels. They are often outside in the garden and are very friendly. We appreciate that not everyone likes dogs so if you ask us to try to keep them away from you we will try to do so but they are usually outside in the summer and we can't guarantee they won't escape and want to greet you... If you dislike dogs please say so when making your enquiry.

The house is old and comfortably, but simply, furnished. If you're looking for the latest flashy bathroom or very shiny stainless steel kitchen, this isn't the place to find it! Think rustic rather than hi-tech.

We had a wonderful time staying in Susan's historic 'Old Mill' cottage. It is perfectly located on the banks of the River Ure just a short walk from the lovely market town of Masham, which is an ideal base from which to explore the Yorkshire Dales. The cottage is spacious, well appointed and comfortable. Guests enjoy a large, private, treed section making this a perfect haven. Susan is an excellent host. She is a 'local' and accordingly can give you all the travels advice and 'hot tips' that enhance a visit. We sincerely hope we are able to stay in the Old Mill cottage again. We highly recommend this place.

This is a lovely cottage in a very beautiful setting in a lovely old town. The bedrooms are spacious, comfortable and very clean. The kitchen is fully supplied with dishes and utensils for cooking. The bathroom is clean and comfortable to use. I can recommend it highly. One thing that prospective guests might find it helpful to know is that the bathroom is on the ground floor, while the bedrooms are on the first. It didn't bother me, but it might be difficult for some people.

This was a wonderful place to stay. Elias and Susan were very welcoming and the information Susan provided was very comprehensive, for the cottage, village and area. The cottage was as promised -- quaint, cozy and in a beautiful setting. The only regret was not having more time to explore and enjoy all that was available. Thanks for the great accommodations!

The description on the website is accurate and fully describes the Mill and its facilities. From the start the hosts were very welcoming and had excellent knowledge of the area which helped us in choosing our visits and eating out. The Mill was clean and comfortable, with spacious, large rooms. It was situated in a quiet, rural location yet not more than 5 minutes walk from the market square. The Mill had a box on the dining room table with maps, and leaflets of things to see and do. We spent most days walking – we drove west to Jervaulx Abbey, and did one 7 mile walk from the box between East Witton and Low Burton, and another day we drove east to Castle Howard (of Brideshead Revisited fame). The hosts have three cocker spaniels – we only actually saw them for an hour or so each evening when they roamed the grounds and the vicinity. They were quiet, and very child friendly. We would definitely stay there again. Thank you to Susan and her family for being so welcoming.

We had a great stay at the cottage. The location was ideal - a short, 5-10 minute walk to the market place, with all the cafes, shops and children's playground, yet sitting in the garden felt very rural - the firepit crackling, the noise of the river flowing by and the view of the grazing cows on the other side of the river. Very pleasant and relaxing after a nice day of countryside walking/hiking. The cottage was lovely and full of character - perfect for a family of 4. The host family was very welcoming, and my kids loved playing with the dogs and using the climbing fence in the garden. I definitely recommend this place.

A big thank you to Susan for being a great host , she armed us with loads of information about Masham & the surrounding areas and we have had a great time . The cottage is lovely in a beautiful setting and Susan ensured we had a very comfortable stay . Our girls loved the garden ( especially the zip wire) and loved playing with the friendly dogs . Loads to do in the area for kids & adults - The Forbidden Corner is a must if you've never been before. Would have no hesitation in booking this accommodation again .

Excellent! The best AirBNB our family of 4 (including a 7yr old) experienced in the UK. A beautiful spacious historic cottage with everything we could need. Masham is a very manageable scale and felt like a working village rather than being too touristy. Easy to walk around, friendly pubs, good butchers and local produce available. And on top of everything a very gracious host. We left Masham relaxed and happy.

I live in the beautiful small market town of Masham in the Yorkshire Dales. I've created a website called DalesDiscoveries to show just how much there is to do here, and recently wrote the "Yorkshire Dales Guide to Health & Happiness", which you'll find in the cottage. I love…
