About this listing

Beautiful, bright, 2 bedroom bungalow in Lipari on private estate surrounded by vineyards, citrus trees and bougainvillea. French doors open to your open air terrace with views of neighboring Vulcano Island, La Faraglioni and Mt Etna. Truly unique.

The space

The property was built by my father, a photographer and entrepreneur over a decades time. He was born in Milazzo and always gazed across the sea with dreams of creating his own paradise in the Aeolie Islands. When he was a boy he worked on Roberto Rossellini's film Stromboli on the island of Stromboli
( subsequently my daughter Isa was named after Isabella Rossellini, the daughter of Roberto and Ingrid Bergman who fell in love on the set of the film) and my father knew he was destined to have his own private retreat in the Aeolie islands. After many years of hard work and travel he bought the side of the mountain facing the town of Lipari and Vulcano, notorious for having the best view in all of Lipari. Ultimately he wanted to build a house for each of his children which he almost succeeded in doing before his sudden death. Many of my brothers and sisters have neighboring homes. And we all share the magnificent gardens my father planted 30 years ago as common space.
The house has a view of the breathtaking La Faraglioni a geological spectacle that is perched in the Mediterranean Sea, just off the coast of the island of Lipari. Vulcano Island, the neighboring active volcano also is part of the magnificent panorama.
On a clear day you can see as far as the snow capped peaks of Mt Etna from the terrace. In the evenings you can see the cost of Sicily sprinkled with city lights glimmering in the distance.
Both bedrooms have high ceilings with french doors to the main living area. The main living area has old stone walls, beautiful blue Italian tile floors and has a studio feel in that the kitchen, dining and living space is in essence one large space which allows for a festive experience. The main area is a wall full of windows and french doors that brings in the natural sunlight and the beautiful sea breeze and gives a vista from anywhere you are in the room; whether you are cooking a yummy meal with local ingredients in the kitchen, lounging on the couch reading a book or eating at the farm style table.
The space was designed with the love of nature and the local Aeolie aesthetic in mind. My mothers oil paintings adorn the bedroom walls. And one of my fathers photography books is on view to flip through. The Aeolian bungalow is a labor of love from my fathers conception of it to my carrying on his dreams and trying to create a colorful, warm inviting space for all to share…. my inspiration being both my parents artistic, bohemian spirits.

Guest access

Guests have use of the bungalow, terrace, outdoor shower, covered rooftop to eat al fresco on sunny days or drink wine in the evenings and the common gardens shared by my family to wander around and enjoy.

Interaction with guests

I presently live in the mountains of Woodstock, New York with my family loving yet another corner of the world with its cornucopia of local ingredients and open spaces with amazing views. I try to get to Lipari as much as possible for family gatherings and in memory of my fathers legacy, but as I am not there full time I want to share its magnificence with as many others as possible. I am in constant contact via internet and phone with any questions pre arrival. Upon arrival my lovely nephew Luca lives in a neighboring house on the property and will be there to greet you, give you keys and answer any questions you may have or assist with any problems that may arise.

Other things to note

Chiesa Vecchia is a beautiful church and view area about 10 minutes past Pianaconte on the main road.
Cannetto is a nice popular beach and just a few minutes past Lipari the opposite direction of the rental. And if you continue about 10 minutes past Cannetto there is the white Pumice beach.

Johanna's house is a really nice place to stay. The house is clean and has all you need to feel comfortable during your stay. The view is wonderful on Vulcano and Etna. Even if there is a bus stop in front of the gate a scooter or à car is better to visit the Island.

We had wonderful 6 days in Johannas Apartment. The Casa was very tidy, well equipped, and furnished with love for detail. The Garden arround and especially the phantastic view of the sea was gorgeous. Luca was very nice and helpful, and gave us many good advices for Lipari. We highly recommend this place.

Johanna's house was fantastic - the location and views are stunning and it is close to the best beach. It was very clean and well equipped and the little estate was lovely. Thank you especially to Luca who gave us so much help, information and fruit. His fig jam was a real highlight!

Staying at Johanna's was incredible, the view in the photograph is exactly what you get, which is perfect in itself. The surroundings are lovely, green and calm and the apartment is beautifully simple and has everything that is required. Luca, was at the gate to greet us, answer any questions we had and give us great recommendations. I only wish we were there for longer to try his limoncello, fig jam and honey! Though we can recommend his arancello made from homegrown produce. We were very happy to walk and use the bus during our time in Lipari, however it might be advisable to hire other transport if this is not your thing. We found that it was perfectly located to explore the wider areas of the island by foot- spiaggia di valle muria & to access the trail from pianoconte to quattropani. Overall our stay was fantastic and would thoroughly recommend staying here.

Wonderful place: incredible view over the sea. From there you can watch and touch the Faraglioni of Lipari and Vulcano island. The house is surrounded by a gorgeus mediterranean garden. We had a very nice stay. The bus stop is in front of the property, but we recommend to rent a car or a scooter to visit easier the beautiful island of Lipari.

I feel at home outside hiking through the woods or wandering down a beach. I love where I live and I am thankful every day I get to wake to such a sweet, peaceful spot. I enjoy having access to the arts, great food yet also being able to relish in the nature and solitude of the Catskills. I love to enjoy time with friends and family and have adventures.
