This special house, with stunning views, has just won the Master Builders Supreme House of the Year award for NZ. Rangi Kahu (sky filled with hawks) gives magical time out to three couples or six friends (the King beds can split to six King singles or your combo) wanting a retreat 15 minutes drive from Wanaka or Cromwell.
The house and studio design are a tribute to Kahu (hawks) that ride the thermal waves. Eight can stay by booking the studio on a separate AirBnB listing.

The space
The house’s soaring triple glazed windows take in sweeping views of the Clutha river, the valley and the surrounding mountains. This is Australasian architect James Stockwell’s latest project. He became renowned for his unorthodox Croft house, deemed by UK TV show host Kevin McCloud to be one of THE best Grand Designs houses ever. This time James has buried the house entrance Hobbit-style in tussocks (a
nod to the Lord of the Rings landscape), with the Canadian oak veneer ceiling pinned down like a tent fly at each end. It’s spectacular!
(NOTE the studio can be rented as well. It is a workspace, meeting room, yoga studio or fourth bedroom that sleeps two on a quality sofa bed. Book Hawk House studio for $220 a night on a separate listing.
The beauty of the architecture and the view allows The Hawk House to calm your spirit. But there is also fun to be had, with the stylish village of Wanaka set on a lake just 15 minutes drive away. Famous Pinot Noir wineries and a historic village of artists are also 15 minutes away near Cromwell. Catch trout in the river (see view), cycle or walk along the water’s edge or hike on Conservation land behind the house.

The house feels like it's far from the madding crowd but a few minutes drive away is the highly regarded Nanny Goat winery, which serves drinks and food, and the world-renowned Hoglund glass gallery. The local historic pub at Luggate has meals nightly and live bands in the beer garden on weekends. There are walking tracks behind the house or you can cycle or walk down by the river. The trout are biting down there too!
There are three beautiful lakes to swim in - Wanaka, Hawea and Dunstan all a short drive away.
Wanaka airport is just up the road for paragliding, helicopter flights or flying lessons and other adventure activities. Two ski fields are a picturesque 40 minute drive away. The property, on a 12 hectare (20 acre) block, is part of an old sheep station, carved up recently to create idyllic lifestyle blocks. It's close to Wanaka township with all its activities and shopping but also blissfully away. The scenery will revive you.

Hello, welcome to Hawk House - New Zealand’s Supreme House of the Year in the 2019 Master Builder awards. The architect James Stockwell has won many awards too. The builder Nick Mizzi of Spearhead Developments has been made a Gold award winner and won the national Craftsmanship award for this stunning build, which has 180 degree views 15 minutes drive from the lively towns of Wanaka and Cromwell. It’s set up for three couples or six friends (or 8 if you book the adjacent spacious studio) to have three nights or more away for a gals’ weekend, fishing trip (trout in the river out front), book group, foodie, hiking, skiing, cycling (famous rail trail nearby), family or wine appreciation (lots of vineyards) catchup. The Super King beds, in the three bedrooms with three beautiful bathrooms, also split to six King singles or your configuration. It’s very elegant but also comfortable, with amazing soaring ceilings to echo the views.
The roof of the house and the mini-me studio are like the wings of the hawks that ride the thermal waves outside the windows. The house was also designed to echo the folds of the landscape on the mountains across from it.
It is solar heated as well as having wall heating and a huge double sided fireplace. You won’t need the heating on much even in snow conditions as it captures the sun and holds the heat in with the double and triple glazed glass.
The kitchen is well stocked and has European appliances. The TV has Netflix. You will love it!
