The space
Welcome to the small version of the tiny house dream that remains nestled within my new home, just east of the CBD yet a world away.

One of the joys of building a new house is that you get to imagine your dream retreat. This master bedroom and en suite has only the basics, as a tiny house would: a beautiful bed, a great bookshelf, a gorgeous shower head, and the ability to dream the night away in an outdoor claw foot bath under the stars.

This place was based on the many nooks and hideaways I loved around New Zealand whose cozy minimalism made them feel luxurious.

Miserable weather can be a bitch in New Zealand, so the indoors has now been plussed up with a 42-inch TV with Netflix, YouTube, cozy heating, espresso coffee, and extra blankets.

There is also a park two doors down from our house, making the area great for runners.

Guest access
Everything you see is 100% yours. You have a private entrance, which leads to the outdoor area, and the bedroom and en suite are just off the deck. There are no shared spaces and no host interaction.

There is plenty of off-street parking on our street for your car, and our driveway is available on the weekends to accommodate guests' cars when there are sports matches on in the park.

Please note that there is a narrow path around the back of the house to your area; you might want to walk it first to get a sense of it before bringing your luggage.

For your privacy, safety, and health, the door that connects your bedroom to the rest of the house will remain locked throughout your stay.

Other things to note
Same-day bookings may be available upon request if you message; however, check-in will need to be three hours from confirmation for new Covid-19 cleaning and sterilisation requirements. Saturday night and extended stays may be available upon request, please message with preferred dates.

There is a microwave, bar fridge, and a kettle for coffee and tea, but there are no cooking facilities-- similar to a hotel room. Treat yourself and eat out. You're on holiday, baby!

Please also note that your area is a separate section of my home, but as we share walls, you will hear some sounds of life. These include when my flatmate and I leave for work in the morning and come home at night. If you expect or need absolute silence, this is not the right place for you.

Being so close to the city, the outdoor area is in close proximity to other houses. Since the house is brand new, the landscaping in the outdoor area is a work in progress. I am working on screening out the neighbours houses with plants and other landscaping features, which will increase the sense of privacy over time. However, at the moment, when standing on the deck or in the bedroom, my neighbours houses are clearly visible and their windows are somewhat visible through the bamboo screening, too.

Since the area with the bath is at ground level, being seen by the neighbours when sitting on the bench or relaxing in the bath is a non-issue. However, they are still close, so if you are shy, you might want to limit carousing outside.

Iron and ironing board available upon request.

Location

Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand

We are in an up and coming area on the eastern fringe of the CBD bordering Woolston, Phillipstown and Linwood, 3 km from the heart of the city. It is an easy five-minute drive into town or 10-minute drive east to New Brighton Beach.

For supplies on foot, a 10-minute stroll through the park takes you to a shopping complex with a supermarket and several takeaway and fast food outlets. A 10-minute stroll in the other direction features a couple more niche items, like a lovely Indian store, a fruit and vegetables market, a bakery, a liquor store, and more.

A little further down the road, if you prefer to hang out east in Woolston, there is a brand new community library, plenty of op shops, a brewery, and a live music venue, and a record store. Walking the same amount of time (about half an hour) in the opposite direction would take you into the heart of Christchurch.

Hello there! Chicago-born, but have called New Zealand my home ever since falling in love with it at the tendershoot age of 20 and staying to write a novel about all of the friends I discovered here, drinking their lives away. These days most of my writing energy is poured into a PhD I am doing through the University of Otago in Dunedin on South Island rock music culture. Sometimes I play in my own band, too. That means I'm often travelling between Christchurch and Dunedin, among other places. If we cross paths, I'd be happy yarn about music and culture if that tickles your fancy, too. I've loved Christchurch ever since being headhunted in 2011 after the earthquakes. I can point you in the direction of a lot of nice venues, bars, and other things worth seeing and doing as the city rises from the ash.

During your stay
My flatmate and I live in the house and can help you out via text if you have any requests.

The deck is the same deck as the one off our house; your area is screened off. If you prefer to be social and see us hanging out, you are welcome to wander round to the other side and spin a yarn. If you would prefer not to talk to a single soul throughout your stay, that's fine with us, too.
