Homer Area Info and recommendations:

Here is a base list for guest about popular things to do and see in our area.
For starters, if you're driving down from Anchorage and would like to see our Alaskan Wildlife, make time to stop at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in Portage. You'll be driving right past it. They offer large viewable habitats for Moose, Bear, Caribou, Muskox, buffalo and more.

A bit about Homer:
While many come here for the fishing, Homer offers some other great experiences for its visitors.
If visiting for the first time a drive out to the Spit is always a must. This is a 4.5-mile long piece of land jutting out into Kachemak Bay. The Spit is also home to the Homer Boat Harbor and the famous Salty Dog Saloon. Additional features and attractions include the seafarers memorial, the Fishing Lagoon, which is an artificial "fishing hole", gift shops and restaurants. From this spot you can usually spot eagles, sea otters and seals right off the beach.

There are several beach access areas in town, a local favorite is called Bishops beach. This area is a bit more sheltered by the main land than the Spit beach, it is popular for walks and beach combing.
If you like to go tide pooling plan your trips at low tide for your best bet to find sea critters and treasures.

Homer is also well known for its artistic community, you may enjoy taking time to visit one of the many local galleries.

If you want to sight-see and would enjoy a panoramic view of the town you can go up Skyline drive that crosses the bluff overlooking Homer where there are several pull outs that over a great photo opportunity.

if you're up for a little more adventure you can travel to the very end of East End Rd, to the switch back trail. (aprox 23 miles) the pavement will ends at 21 mile, a gravel road will take you to the trail head, that will give you some great views of the head of Kachemak bay and the glaciers. It also will give you beach access if you decided to go down the switch back. This area is highly used by the locals and is central to two of our local Russian villages. So even though remote, there is a higher than expected level of traffic in that area. If you do plan to park at the trail head and hike around make sure to lock up your vehicle. The switch back can also be navigated with a 4wd vehicle but do so with caution, the road is steep and narrow in places.
If you are interested in other hiking opportunities you can find great info on more Homer trails online
If you have time for it I would highly recommend a trip across the bay. there are hiking trails to glacier lakes and a few small communities such as Halibut cove and Seldovia that are a pleasure to visit. These are accessible via water taxi.

If Halibut cove interests you there is a nice day tour offered by the Danny J & the Saltry Restaurant. They have affordable rates and run two different trips, a afternoon tour that takes in sea bird watching, and a shorter dinner time trip.
You can get info about it here at their web page:
www. thesaltry. com / danny-j-ferry /

Head of the bay horse back rides are available from Trails End Horse adventures for groups of all sizes.

Eating out:
My personal favorite for a nice dinners or sushi is Wasabi's,
other local favorites of this nature would be Aj's Steakhouse in the older part of Homer, The Lands End and Captain Pattys on the spit.
Homer is full of seasonal restaurants that offer a wide range of menu options if you decide to look farther than what is listed Im sure you will find even more excellent dining experiences.

For on the go we like to grab sandwiches from Fritz Creek General store (featuring fresh baked breads and treats), or grab and go wraps from the drive through at Stowaway Cafe, near Kachemak Gear shed.

Homer is full of activities in the summer, I hope this list helps give you a start of some helpful insights to the area, and please let me know if you need more info on anything in particular. : )
