The location of the property was ideal for us while visiting family nearby. Ken was a very friendly person. However we did have concerns about the overall appearance of the property, not least because its in need of a good spring clean. We also felt that the size of room would make it more suitable for use by a single person.

Ken was busily mowing an overgrown lawn in an unkempt small garden and effected surprise as we arrived. So, not overly welcoming. As we moved through the house he tidied things out of the way as we went. The bedroom was very small, the small double bed pushed up against the window wall with dumbbells visible under the bed, a computer desk it was impossible to sit at and baby changing mat shoved between the wardrobe and the wall. The bed could not be climbed into from either side or the end, just the one side. So, hardly as advertised and well below expectations. The area was typical north east old miners houses with a couple of new builds. The first thing we noticed was the smashed cabinet housing the property's gas meters and the alleyway full of rubbish. All the windows were grimy with drawn and closed curtains. Immediately we began to have second thoughts. So, not particularly inviting and below expectations. After we'd seen the house, the room and the shared bathroom despite our misgivings we took the suitcase upstairs and went for something to eat. We decided against staying and returned to collect the suitcase. We left a scribbled note noting our disgust, letting Ken know that we thought he was extracting money from us under false pretences and left. Since then I have spoken with Ken detailing our disappointment at what he was offering. Whilst objecting to some of my forthright comments he did nonetheless agree to refund one night's fees. At this point however I have received nothing. Airbnb in my view need to vet their hosts fully because this was totally unacceptable.

Response from Ken:
What Alan fails to mention is that he arrived earlier than agreed. Not a problem to me, but grass would have been fully trimmed if he had arrived as agreed. Nothing was tidied out of the way as we went in. I just don't understand that comment. What bed is accessible from the headboard end? Beats me I am afraid. The suitcases were taken up before seeing the shared bathroom. What Alan also fails to mention is that the accommodation was booked for himself alone. How many sides of a bed did we want to access the bed? I wonder. Once booked, he contacted me and asked if his wife could stay for the first night. Although there is an extra charge, I did not make an extra charge. When he phoned a few days after he said his friends' accommodation that weekend was 1,000% better. Really? The date that Alan wrote this report was a day after Airbnb contacted him with the refund offer. I believe my words put a fairer perspective. I like to be objective, but since this is my page, I found Alan to be a thoroughly objectionable individual. Everyone else who has stayed at my house has been fantastic. Admittedly, within Alan's economic sense of truth and fairness some points had some......actually, no, no, no. I had even purchased breakfast foods and this was shown to Alan and his wife, They seemed quite grateful. Breakfast isn't included. Apologies, if I don't provide breakfast for free to anyone from now on, blame Alan. I regret not reviewing Alan to warn other providers. What a chump. The bed is a standard double bed. I bow to Alan's superior knowledge on bed sizes. I am educated now. Some standard double beds must be millimetres smaller than others. Did I say....what a chump.

Ken was very friendly and welcoming. He was very patient and a great help when we arrived later than planned. This is a great place for a stopover just outside of Newcastle with a nice little pub just up the road. Ken was very helpful even going to the pub before our arrival to ask if dogs were welcome in the pub. My girlfriend and I had a very comfortable stop over which was perfect for my first Great North Run experience.
