Whether you are visiting Berkeley to study, work, teach, visit friends or family, or attend a training course, this distinctive and spacious 2 floor Elmwood apartment might be what you need!

The space

The space

This renovated 2-floor apartment is approx 960 sq ft (89 sq meters) in total. The upstairs open-plan loft/living room/bedroom is 680 sq ft (63 sq meters) and the downstairs area is 280 sq ft (26 sq meters).

Downstairs, the apartment features a modern kitchen, bathroom with double stall shower, and a den with a TV, sofa and futon. The futon in the den converts to a double bed for an extra guest or two (but it's technically not a "bedroom" since it doesn't have a closet). Upstairs is a large bright, sunny loft which serves as a combined bedroom and living space. There is an open-plan half-bath adjacent to the sleeping area (screened from the bed area but - important to note - no door). The bed is a custom-made king-size chest bed with storage drawers underneath. The apartment has hardwood floors throughout, except the kitchen and bathroom which have tiled floors. It’s fully furnished and equipped – and decorated with accents such as etched glass, indirect lighting, and marble floor inserts, while retaining much of the original character. There’s a shared washer and dryer on the back porch. One off-street parking space will usually be available for your use - but you can manage fine without a car since there's good public transport and Zipcar and City Car Share locations a block away.

It’s ideal for 2 people, although there is a convertible futon in the den that could be used for additional guests.

Our rates are all-inclusive. We pay the Berkeley business license tax, but it is not charged to you.

The building

A bit of history: Eric Lindblom from Sweden came to the US in the late 1880s and was one of the “Three Lucky Swedes” who discovered gold in the Nome district of Alaska. He invested the proceeds in real estate (among other things), including the Claremont Hotel – and his former wife had this building built in 1911!

The Neighborhood

The apartment is in the Elmwood residential district, close to stores, cafes, sandwich shops, coffee houses, bookstores, music stores, and student hangouts on Telegraph Avenue. A CVS pharmacy is 2 blocks away; Whole Foods is 5 blocks. For foodies, there are numerous specialty and ethnic restaurants & cafes in several directions.

The Berkeley Campus is 5 short blocks to the north – a 10-minute walk. It's 10 minutes' walk from Alta Bates Hospital.

There are buses along College Avenue (one block away) to downtown Berkeley and the Rockridge BART station (Bay Area Rapid Transit system). The Claremont Hotel & Conference Center is just over a mile away – a 20 minute walk. There’s easy freeway access from Claremont Avenue, which enables you to drive to San Francisco, Oakland, Marin County & the Golden Gate Bridge, Napa Valley, and Lake Tahoe. Twenty minutes driving (outside of rush hours!) will take you to San Francisco across the new Bay Bridge, or if you take BART, it’s about a 20 minute ride to SF from Rockridge BART.

Our delightful managers Binyam and Bruk (originally from Ethiopia) know this property well; they live in another apartment in the building and Binyam did much of the remodeling work. One or both of them will welcome you when you arrive and will be available during your stay by phone or e-mail to answer any questions (as I will). Otherwise, we respect your privacy - you will have the place to yourself and won’t be disturbed.

Margaret's place is nice, comfy and clean. The second level has room for my child to play and laze around. The sofa is almost new and in good conditions. We see some new furnitures in the living room with a new sofa bed, 2 armchairs! The place has fully equipped kitchen. The whole place is brightly lit and spacious. We are grateful and fortunate to stay in a friendly environment where neighbors are kind and approachable! We are allowed to use the washing machine and dryer. Not forgetting Brooke and her husband, they are of so much help to us and friendly, always asking us is it ok here and there and feel free to ask them anything we need! This place is highly recommended

The apartment was very comfortable for two persons and we enjoyed to stay close to the university and the Elmwood shops and restaurants. The heating downstair was a little bit loud and the kitchen was cold before Bruk brought us a heater for the kitchen. Furthermore, during our stay they brought new kitchen ware. The house managers Binyam and Bruk were very nice and helpful. Margaret gave us a lot of helpful information.

Lovely apartment close to the university and to the shops, very comfortable. A bit noisy on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night because of the students. The heating in general in the apartment is loud, the thermal insulation is not that good and there is no heating in the kitchen, which can be a problem during winter. Margaret was helpful, responded quickly and gave lots of information. The housekeeper was also very helpful.

Born in England, now living in California for many years. Two (!!) graduate degrees from UC Berkeley. Frequent travel – tired of chain hotels. I have been an Airbnb guest in the US and several other countries and have appreciated the experience of staying in a real home, a place with warmth and character, in an interesting walkable neighborhood. That’s what my co-host (my husband Jack) and I offer you, too, in Berkeley – a vibrant town with an internationally renowned university, distinctive architecture, innovative restaurants, serious coffee houses, bookstores, parks, museums, theater, a lively music scene – and conveniently close to San Francisco.
