A converted shipping container just above the tree line.
We'll take you up through the forest in our golf cart. Completely off-grid. A queen bed, 100% linen, a well-equipped kitchen, bathroom, and a covered deck with a fire pit, hammock and Cape Cod chairs. Rain is never a reason to go inside.
In the outdoor bath you'll be soaking under the stars, above the forest.
The space
Wild Forest Tin Box is completely off-grid. A feature of your stay will be spending time in the outdoor bath. You’ll be soaking under the stars and feeling like you’re sitting on top of the forest.
The inside is decorated with vintage kilim, contains a comfortable queen size bed with 100% luxury linen bedding, a bathroom with shower and flushing toilet. Outside, decorated by nature, is the undercover kitchen with BBQ, gas hob and chilly bin to keep food cold.
When the fire restrictions allow you may choose to set the outdoor fire. Firewood is an extra $15 per night, please let us know if you would like some supplied. We have our firewood delivered by Greenways Trust who provide residential service and support for people with intellectual disabilities and we love to help support what they do.
In the winter things can get chilly. Please pack warm and snuggly clothes. We provide hot water bottles, ideal for those awe inspiring stargazing sessions on the hammock made for two. Be ready to hear the Kiwi and Ruru calling at night during your stay. They live here. Please don’t disturb them if you see them.
A world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday city life, it's a place that bestows a sense of clarity. A place where, rather than rushing through the hours of the day, you're soaking in every moment for all it's worth.

Park your car at 990 Trounson Park Road
The cabin is a 7-10 min uphill walk so please only pack what you can carry for your stay. Otherwise let us know your arrival time and we can give you a lift with your gear in the electric golf cart.
We do have other retreats on the property so please respect the privacy of others. If you would like to explore please check with us to see if we have other guests staying.
We are proudly an inclusive stay and all guests of any background or community are welcome here into a safe space.

An EV charger is available at the guest carpark.
Trounson Kauri Park is 3km along the road one of the best places in NZ to see kiwi in the wild. We can lend you a torch with a red filter on request.

The property is 40 min from the nearest shops so remember to stock up with supplies.
The last few km of your journey is gravel road.
We supply candles in protective lanterns, please use only those. Emergency services are 40 minutes away.
An outdoor fire is available outside fire ban periods. Firewood is $15 per night just let us know. We're slowly removing old pine trees that don't belong in this forest, and a local arborist helps us do it. Buying firewood is part of how that work gets funded.
The Tin Box runs on solar. Bring a power bank, or we can charge your devices at the main house.
We're 40 minutes from the nearest supermarket (Countdown, Dargaville), stock up well. The last few kilometres are gravel road.
Our little shop, Wild Supplies, is open on request at the main house, quality clothes, recycled novels and small things we love.
We ask that you take non-compostable rubbish with you when you leave.
We're in the process of rewilding the property, stepping back and letting nature repair itself, find its own balance, with as little human intervention as possible. If that interests you, we recommend Fools and Dreamers on Vimeo by Happen Films — the story of a 30-year rewilding project by NZ botanist Hugh Wilson. It's worth an hour of your time.

My work: Wild Forest Estate
Having been a child free to roam and sleep in the forest, after 18 years working as a photographer in Auckland I found here. An amphitheatre of wild forest in a secluded corner of Northland. A 110-year-old Kauri cottage beside a spring stream. A shipping container above the bush. A treehouse built from a salvaged Kauri villa, suspended in the canopy. Nigel and I live here at Wild Forest Estate. You're welcome to come.
