Your nervous system relaxes on 60acres in nature's stillness, yet you're not far (10-25 minutes) from high culture, meaningful entertainment, & myriad recreational opportunities. Our spacious cottage sanctuary promises rustic comfort, cleanliness, modern conveniences, 3-beds, full kitchen, large library + views. The property supports evergreens, gardens, a pond, ranch critters (chicken & alpaca), a shallow pond, BLM trails, & peaceful shady places to hang out. Canine Companions Welcome ($25fee)

The space

Our Homestead Woodland Cottage is the perfect place from which to explore the wonders of Southern Oregon and the Rogue Valley. Also a dreamy private meditation retreat space. Bring your entire family, and your dogs, come alone or with a romantic companion, and enjoy a vacation in nature with all the modern conveniences.
The bungalow is built for comfort. The living room at Homestead Cottage is large and open, the walls lined with books. You can settle to watch the 42” plasma screen TV offering cable, HBO, Showtime, and a selection of DVDs, upon one of the IKEA queen sofabeds (they easily become queen beds for sleeping upon) or several arm-chairs.
The living room offers walls of filled bookshelves (please read while staying with us) plus has a desk with PC, a free-standing fireplace, and a lovely round drop-leafkitchen table with chairs. The kitchen is large and well-appointed with an excellent gas stove and oven, microwave, toaster, dishwasher, garbage disposal, a good selection of pots, pans, dishes, and cutlery, and pantry space. The fridge is small, but a reasonable size for a family on vacation.
The private bedroom has a new queen bed, a wardrobe and dresser, several antique chairs, and a small washer & dryer (not available in the cold months).
Expect DSL wi-fi for all your computer connections. Expect also that you are so remote your cell phone won’t work inside the bungalow (there’s a cell phone “sweet spot” in front of the cottage, though, and in many outdoor areas nearby).
Homestead Woodland Cottage’s bathroom has a deep stainless steel sink and plenty of hooks for towels, which we provide and are plentiful. The large, custom, cultured marble shower features a bench and a pair of shower faucets so you can shower together with a friend or lover.
Homestead Woodland Cottage has great versatility of sleeping options, so it’s terrific for a family or friends get-away adventure. There’s a comfortable queen bed in the bedroom. There’s a pair of comfortable convertible futon sofabeds in the living room. We also have two large, comfortable cots as extra beds. And the land offers several lovely, level spaces for tent camping or an extra RV to park.
Homestead Cottage is about 1000 feet higher elevation than the floor of the Rogue Valley, so in summer the area is about 10 degrees cooler. The cottage is well insulated, and even on the hottest days (100+), the air temperature inside never rises about 79. In the winter, there’s a gas wall furnace to take the edge off and a free-standing fireplace that heats the interior so well that when there’s snow on the ground (which happens a couple times a year at our 2300 foot elevation) we often have to crack the windows to cool us down. We'll supply you with all the firewood you need.
You are welcome to bring your dog when you vacation with us. Our flock of chicken wanders freely, so we ask you keep an eye on your pets – sometimes they chase chickens and that doesn’t work for us. But we love canine visitors. Please note that we charge $25 when you bring your dog(s) and we will add this to your reservation after it is accepted.
You may smoke outside the cottage, but we request you to manage your residue/odor, and know that we prefer you not smoke tobacco.

Guest access

You are welcome to wander all of our 60-acres of our property, but please note we are in a valley and most of the level land is occupied by buildings. There's obvious places to walk closer to the buildings including the meadows, the garden, the pond, the upper orchard, the canyon. You can hang in a hammock, swing in our sky chair, find plenty of shady spots to read a book or just be with the natural world, dine at our shady picnic table after using the bar-b-que, and hike some of our hilly woodland trails, (We've put in a number of trails and can recommend hikes. Ask RG about a ride up to the horse trails on BLM land).
Homestead Woodland cottage is intended for you to enjoy the peaceful vitality of nature, between expeditions into the Rogue Valley. From here see plays, dine or shop in Ashland (25-minutes); wander historic Jacksonville (10-minutes); go wine-tasting in the Applegate Valley15-minutes); play or raft in the Rogue River(50 minutes); ski Mt. Ashland (45-minutes) in the winter or hike Crater Lake in the summer. All the wonders of Southern Oregon are near to your vacation pleasure spot, Homestead Woodland Cottage.
You are welcome to bring your dog when you vacation with us, although we will add a $25 fee to your reservation (Please tell us about your animals so we can include the fee when we accept your reservation). We can offer an outdoor dog run if needed. Our flock of chicken wanders freely, so we ask you keep an eye on your pets – sometimes they chase chickens and that doesn’t work for us. But we love friendly canine visitors.

Interaction with guests

We're available anytime you wish to interact with us or enjoy complete privacy; it's your choice. RG and Candace live in the two story house next to the cottage (see photos). RG is often to be seen on his tractor or riding his Gator around. We have 60-acres which include a large garden and some livestock (chickens and bees). We have 3 friendly dogs (Hermes, Ku'a, & Ruby Tuesday). Candace comes and goes, tending to both the Homestead and Chakra Garden of Ashland. Both of us are naturally friendly and we'll interact with you as much or as little as you prefer. This land has been in RG's family since 1887, and he was raised a couple of miles away, so he knows a lot about the area. We welcome families with children and pets, and single people or couples wanting a quiet retreat experience.

Other things to note

Homestead Woodland Cottage is a vacation rental annex to our property Chakra Garden of Ashland where we have several cottages for travelers in downtown Ashland.
It's a quick drive to Jacksonville (10-min), Medford (12-min) and Ashland (25-min), yet you can expect a peaceful experience when you stay at Homestead Woodland Cottage. The nearest neighbor is more than 0.3 miles distant. A car might pass along the nearby easement road once every day or two (going to or from home). You’ll not listen to traffic at night, but instead enjoy the cackle of hens and the occasional rooster crow, buzzing bees from our four hives, our two old, friendly dogs barking at pesky squirrels, a nearby family of night owls hooting, or the gaggle of wild turkey as they cross the front yard.

Candace and her partner RG were so communicative, kind, and providing of a beautiful space. I stayed with four other people, as we were in town for a friend's wedding at the Orchard Home Bed & Breakfast. This in law unit was 10 mins from our destination, and although it didn't have phone service was the perfect place to get some reading done in our down time. Their dogs were so sweet. Also, the home was well stocked with amenities and the beds were comfortable and warm. Thank you, Candace! I hope to come back again.

Response from Candace:
Hi Maddie - Our Wi-Fi works great, and setting your cell phone on "Wi-Fi Calling" makes it work perfectly for texts and calls. I'll make sure that's in guest orientation notes in the future. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Pros: quiet; double headed shower with bathroom skylight; larger than expected space; gas range; comfy main bed; multiple ceiling fans to keep cottage cool in the hot summer months; Ruby Tuesday the dog loves pats; there are lots of nice towels; convenient drive to Jacksonville including a super market, gas station, shopping, etc. You should know: the fridge is studio style size so it made our one Red Coleman cooler of food a tight fit; the futons may best be suited to kids/teens as they aren't super comfortable for sleeping; we did a lot of cooking and if you plan to make large cooked dishes consider bringing your own large pan- I would have brought a sturdy cutting board, chefs knife and my cast iron. RG and Candace were very respectful and gave us plenty of privacy. There were a few questions we had through out our time there and Candace responded promptly and was gracious and helpful. If you wanna get away from some city hustle this is a grand place place to do it. Plus there might be amazing thunderstorm shows! We saw sideways lightning :)
