Base Camp Anchorage is a hostel run by world travelers passionate about Alaska and its backcountry. We believe in community and positive social exchange for travelers visiting our state.

The space

Welcoming atmosphere, large spacious backyard, bicycle rentals, new wood burning cedar barrel sauna, and bonfire.

Guest access

We offer a private room and spacious 4 bed dorms. Free breakfast with organic coffee, oatmeal, and pancakes. Our backyard is ideal for hikers and bicyclists to organize gear and prepare for upcoming trips. We also rent bicycles at our hostel and recently built a new barrel sauna for weary travelers to relax their muscles after returning from their trips.

Interaction with guests

We are a hostel focused on a positive social community but also give guests their privacy. We are not a party hostel and our quiet hours begin at 11pm. Our guests determine the level of interaction they are comfortable with.

Other things to note

Our hostel has both female and mixed dorm rooms and well as one private room. Dorm rooms must be booked directly through the hostel.

For the value, an excellent choice.

The place at Base Camp is nice and well located close to downtown Anchorage. It is primarily a hostel, with one private room. There were a LOT more people staying there than I had imagined, which took some time to get used to for noise and bathroom availability. Overall it was a good deal.

Ole was very welcoming and helpful, really nice guy and he does some interesting community work in rural areas. The hostel is clean, the kitchen is nice (the free leftovers are a nice touch!) and the location is just fine, close to buses and bike paths which were useful to me. It was a bit noisier than I like but it wasn't such a big deal in the end.

This was a great gem of a place! It's exactly what you need out of a base camp- it's quiet and conveniently located. We took a 16 dollar can ride from the airport here but other than that didn't need a car. There are a few local outdoor shops where we got last minute things and also an REI within walking distance. We walked 2 easy miles to downtown to get out rental car. There was a nice place to eat dinner nearby also. Our host gave us a great tip on a place to find spring water on our drive out of the city and its probably the freshest glacier water we've ever had. Met some friendly travelers all leaving the city that day and we made coffee together and chatted before we left. We stayed in the private room which was clean. Really appreciate the hosts!

The hostel/room were clean and as I expected. Bikes were available for rent to get around town. Nice neighborhood. Last minute travel changes had me looking for a place to stay the night before my reservation. The staff was super helpful getting me some last minute dorm bunks to accommodate us. It worked out great. It would be nice if the dorms were listed as well but you can just contact the hostel directly.

Overall I would say that the experience was good! It is important to remember that this is a youth-hostel and not a persons home. Youth Hostels are a great place to gather information and meet fellow travelers...besides that it was clean and efficient.

Response from Olegario:
Correct. Even though the room will be private, we are a functioning hostel and so the bathroom and common areas will be shared with other guests. But as Andrew mentioned, a fun way to meet other people traveling through Alaska! Safe travels Andrew
