Unusual urban listing for the eco-conscious: a charming and private 10 x 12 foot cottage with modern comforts and craftsman style. There's a private outdoor WC with a composting toilet and sink, and a hot shower in a greenhouse adjacent to cottage. 12% Berkeley hotel tax is due at check-in. Cash preferred.

The space

This is an unusual urban listing for the eco-conscious or eco-curious. The offering is a private 10 x 12 foot cottage. The room features a 100% botanical latex mattress and cotton sheets. There's a night stand, reading light, some good books to read, and an empty cabinet to put your clothing and belongings into. There is electricity and good lighting with a dimmer in the room, which has a peaked ceiling. It gets nice, warm, southern and western exposure. In the room I provide a selection of organic herbal and caffeinated teas with an electric kettle. There's also a coffee press and organic fresh grounds for coffee lovers. Cups and mugs and soft towels provided. There is a little refrigerator and I can put in organic milk for your first 2 mornings if requested. There is no kitchen or microwave. The room has a table with 2 stools.

Outside the room is a round table with 2 chairs in a succulent garden with a shade cloth, outside the WC. The WC has a cold water only farm sink that waters a nearly cherry tree as you use it. The toilet is a handmade composting toilet, with a bamboo toilet seat, which I will empty and clean as needed. The toilet requires no water and uses wood shavings provided.

The hot shower is located in the greenhouse. It is a propane fired shower with a removable nozzle and good pressure. Eco friendly soaps and shampoo/conditioner are provided as this drains into the garden adjacent. At certain times of the year, you may shower near flats of seedlings being raised for the organic garden.

The outdoor WC and shower are lit by dim, ambient, solar lighting, and I also provide 2 head lamps and a lantern for your use.

This space is a wonderful, relatively quiet place to stay with your own private cottage where you can watch the birds and insects and tomatoes ripen on the vines. It has a country feel in the very urban bay area. There are cats on the property.

Guest access

Wifi available in the room.

Guests are not allowed to linger around the main house unless personally invited. The cottage and garden use is for paid guests only. Since two families live in the main house who like to spend time in the garden as well, it is important that we don't have additional unknown people hanging out in the space. If you want to have a close family member or friend over, please ask first.

There is plenty of on street parking.

There is no laundry access.

Interaction with guests

I live in the main house and am available by text, phone, or in person for questions and recommendations. I will mostly likely be present during the guest's stay but busy working, gardening, or living my very full life. Guests are free to be as independent and private as they wish. Sometimes I never meet guests because schedules can be opposite.

A 12% Hotel tax is due for the City of Berkeley upon check in. Cash requested.

Other things to note

There's a wood burning stove that is purely decorative and is NOT functional.

Also, there is a water catchment tank off the metal roof. It hasn't been raining much lately in Berkeley the last few years, but I am catching every drop to use in the garden. The rain on the roof is louder than other types of roofing, so if that bothers you then it is best to stay elsewhere.

Also, for the eco-conscious folks, all of the airbnb towels and bedding are washed in an energy efficient machine with solar hot water. Because the detergent is designed for a greywater system, I am able to use this precious water in the ornamental gardens.

Sequoiah's urban farm is quite simply a wonderful place to stay! After a very long & tiring journey, I couldn't have arrived at a better place... and every day when I came back from my daily travels, I felt exactly the same. There are not enough superlatives to describe this farm... Just go visit and think of them for yourself!

Amazing place especially for the price. It’s a bit rustic, but very well thought out. I have stayed in two other Airbnb locations in the area and this is my favorite!

This was seriously one of our best, most unique AirBnB stays we’ve had. The room, which is away from the main house is super cozy, and exactly as the pictures show it. That being said, we never felt claustrophobic due to the high ceilings and big windows. The curtains were a thin, so even with them closed, the room was pretty well lit during the day. On the bathing and bathroom situation, you definitely need to be ok with a little rusticness. The toilet is a bucket under a platform with a toilet seat on it in which you need to scoop saw dust into after each use. After the 3 days of our stay, it was a little smelly in there, but at least it was all our smell and not a previous guest’s from a previous stay. Plenty of bugs and spiders to keep you company while you’re doing your business. The shower is in a green house and it’s actually really beautiful to shower under the passionfruit vine and next to little sprouting plants while standing on mossy paver stones. If the water is cold, you can bend down and look through the window on the water heater to see if the fire is lit. If not, we just turned the water on and off a couple times until it stayed on. Our host was very responsive (when she could be for reasons she openly explained to us) and set us up with coffee and milk before we arrived. All in all, we had a wonderful, quiet, secluded, romantic getaway weekend!

I enjoyed a lovely stay at the cozy cottage in the garden, and the location was perfect. It is a great "back to nature" experience! Sequoia's check in/check out instructions were clear and she answered my questions promptly:)

This place is a eco-friendly, green living dream in a lively garden. Neighborhood is decent with some cool shops and restaurants. Plan to eat out or cold food only as there's no way to reheat.

I am a garden designer that was born in the San Francisco Bay Area. I am passionate about many things including horticulture, sustainable living and architecture, dance, visual art, music, and cooking. I have a delightful and amazing 14 year old son who loves archery, animals, making crafts and eating pizza. He is a strict vegetarian!

We are nature lovers but also interested in cultural experiences and exchanges. We love hiking, exploring, ocean and watery experiences as well as cafe's, health food stores, museums, and resting in a park.

I love being an host at my "A Farm In Berkeley" eco cottage. It is fun hosting different people visiting Berkeley and finding that it is a small world after all!

Life is short, and precious, and I intend on living a full, meaningful life of love and appreciation.
