Writing a review on “Barbara’s place” is tricky. The place itself was fine (more on that to follow), but I felt the transaction was not quite as presented. When I booked through Airbnb, I was under the mistaken assumption that “Barbara’s place” was a condo she owned and was renting out (the listing states the property type to be an apartment and it’s titled “Palm Canyon 1 Bedr Suite #1). That “Suite #1” sounded specific to me. Also, I had scanned the reviews and must have focused on the one that mentioned the pool being right outside of the room, and as such, I was expecting that to be the case. Perhaps it was my fault for not contacting Barbara and getting some clarification in advance; I just didn’t feel the need at the time. Turns out this is a timeshare condo resort, and they put you in any available room. Our view from the third floor was of the rooftop of the large building that houses the registration area, fitness center, etc.. Had I known, I would have requested a more desirable unit. The arrival process included waiting some time in the line for registration. Arriving an hour before the noted check-in time of 4:00pm, I was hoping the unit would be ready, and asked at the front desk if we could check in early. I was told, “Yes, we can get you registered in advance.”, but then after going through the process, I was told that the unit wasn’t actually ready yet and they’d call me when it was. After registration, they send you to the timeshare table where you listen to the spiel about signing up. At that table they had twice the number of attendants as they had at registration. I should say, everyone was very nice; it’s just not what I expected. I never did receive a call that told me our unit was ready, but went back there shortly after 4:00pm, waited in line again, and then received our unit instructions. That’s when I found out that I was not getting a specific unit actually owned by Barbara. The resort itself was nice. The one bedroom unit we had was spacious, clean, comfortable, and well appointed. The only downsides were the loud air-conditioning unit, the spotty internet connection, and the subpar view. The pool area was great - attractive, well laid out, and lots of fun. The Splash Bar was also a big plus, although we wished it had longer hours (closed at 8:00pm on Saturday and 7:00pm on Sunday). Everyone there was very nice and friendly. Since I never had contact with Barbara, I can’t really offer a review of her as a “host”. My naiveté questions how she was involved in any of this to begin with other than her posting through Airbnb. I would suggest a more specific posting that states this to be a timeshare, etc., etc. Also, I see now that booking directly through the resort offers comparable pricing,...

The resort was very accommodating to us! Our 4 year old daughter adored the pool and water slide, as did my wife and I. The staff were all friendly and polite. The pool bar food was good, and reasonably priced. We've already recommended this resort to friends and family, and are likely to return.

If you have family and kids this is the place to go. Barbara offers her time share in this great family-friendly resort at a deep discount. We know because friends of mine rented a comp in the same resort to be near us. Their room was smaller and didn't have a full kitchen like ours and they paid $30 a night more. The unit was bigger than in the photos and well stocked. The downsides are: 1. The lack of cell phone reception, because you are surrounded by mountains on three sides. This would have been nice to know ahead of time, as I was there to conduct a lot of business and had to switch to email and online messaging to communicate with all my appointments. The wifi kicked you off frequently too. 2. The noise level if you are as unfortunate as us to stay under heavy footed people and their heavy-footed kids. All we heard while in the room was thuds and footsteps of elephants. I tried to call front desk from the hotel type phone, no answer. I called security: no answer. These people let their kids run and jump in the room until midnight and it woke me up several times. Finally it stopped when they went to sleep, but started right up again at 6:00 AM! The next night it started again and I had to go up twice to complain, because I needed to sleep more than six hours. Overall the stay was great. The pools were nice, but the use of wristbands for limited access means only guests registered at the resort are allowed to enter the pool area. The small details (about limited pool access and no cell signal) would have been nice to know about. I wanted to photograph some models by the pool and knowing about the limited pool access in advance would have allowed me to select a place that would have worked better for this stay in Palm Springs. I'll definitely be back for my son's sake. He is three and I loved the fact that there were plenty of kids at the pool for him to play with. Everyone was very friendly too.
