The Historic U Street Corridor was once truly the heart of black culture in America, attracting locals and visitors for an unparalleled music and nightlife scene. Perhaps not coincidentally, it’s also the birthplace of celebrated DC hero, jazz musician Duke Ellington. Today, this section of the city is as vibrant as ever, anchored by the lively 14th Street corridor to the west and the refurbished Howard Theatre and renowned 9:30 Club — bordering the Shaw neighborhood to the east.

You'll be a stone's throw away from grabbing a signature half-smoke sausage at the world-famous Ben’s Chili Bowl and taking a selfie in front of their colorful mural of famous Washingtonians, or perhaps you may just rub elbows with a famous politician or celebrity.

The U Street neighborhood is historic and colorful, boasting some of the richest culture of the city and full of bars, restaurants, and boutiques — as well as plenty of DC locals who come to enjoy the culture and the people-watching.

A diversity of funky boutique shops abound, for clothing, decor and records; and a new bar seemingly opens up every weekend. The best way to take it all in is just taking a stroll, day or night.

I live and work in DC, and enjoy exploring new spots to eat, drink and laugh till my cheeks hurt with my partner, Josh. Important things to know when visiting DC: the monuments are better at night, 9:30 Club is a great music venue, there are lots of good restaurants beyond Logan Circle, and the best croissants in the city are at Pluma by Bluebird Bakery.
