The apartments at Rue Barbès are three beautifully restored period apartments each occupying their own floor and with own private entrance. They are ideally located for Carcassonne in the hustle and bustle of the Bastide in one of the most popular quartiers, close the shops, markets and museums. Step back in time to the elegance of Regency France but with all modern conveniences. We have a boutique wine shop on the ground floor, so guests are always welcome to pop in for local advise.

The space

Each of the individually decorated apartments occupies one entire floor of the property and is named after a famous French photographer. The apartments are perfectly located for the weekly markets, shops and alfresco dining. The property dates from the 1730's and we tried to keep the character of the property but with all the benefits of modern fittings, antique furniture and fine art. From the moment you walk into the apartments you will be transported to the elegance and romance of 18th century France, but with all modern comforts. Classic french beds, luxurious linen, shower, antique furniture and modern kitchens. The apartments are perfect for a couple wanting a romantic break or even for small group bookings of up to three couples.

Guest access

Private apartment with exclusive use of facilities. The bedroom has an antique French double bed with quality mattress, Frette cotton sheets, duck down duvets and soft pillows. Sheets and blankets are also available on request. There are bedside lamps, an antique wardrobe, reading armchair and dressing table and oriental carpets on the floor. The full length French windows have the original internal shutters which traditionally keep the rooms cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The French windows can open to lead out onto the sunny balcony.

Interaction with guests

We bought this town house in 2008. At the time it was an almost derelict building. Today it has been patiently and lovingly restored keeping the character of a 18th century town house but with all modern conveniences. The ground floor is now a delightful and bright wine shop and art gallery.

We have lived in France for 13 years, brought up six children and want to share our love of France and Carcassonne with our friends and guests. The apartments were first rented in 2010; the final part of the project has been the restoration and opening of the boutique wine shop in December 2012 which also a gallery and tasting room. Located at 38 rue Barbes on the ground floor, this wonderful and warm locale has quickly become a favourite meeting place for guests and customers alike. We live in the heart of the Minervois countryside about 15 minutes from town but we are always on hand to help our guests make the most of their holiday.

Other things to note

Each apartment shares a private entrance with intercom.
Apartment Cartier Bresson is located on the first floor . With high ceilings and tall windows the apartment is light and airy and the original wooden floors have the warmth and rich deep patina of a hundred years of history. The double french windows open onto a long balcony with flowers and window boxes. The french windows have original internal regency style shutters to allow guests to have the privacy and quiet enjoyment of the apartment. The sitting room is comfortably furnished with oriental carpets, deep sofas, arm chairs and paintings. There is a flat screen television with DVD, hi fi and free wifi. There is a selection of books and a library of films is also available.
The kitchen is fully fitted with marble worktops with all modern conveniences.
Rue Barbes is located just off Place Carnot with its lively markets, cafes and restaurants.

The apartment is spacious and well finished. The kitchen is big and well equipped to cook meals if you wanted to. The balcony was great and we ate breakfast on the balcony most mornings. The apartment is well located for the local shops and restaurants and the medieval cite is a short walk away. We loved our time staying here!

The apartment was nice, beautifully decorated and functional. We were greeted on arrival with a bottle of wine which was lovely, and lots of advice for the town. It was very hot on our first night, there was a fan which helped. Once it cooled down it was very nice. There was a lot of noise from the street, but the fan drowned out a lot of the noise.

We had the fullest of information from our hosts prior to arriving, also help with planned outings. The welcome was warm and friendly and involved 2 complimentary bottles of wine. The hosts were also available but unobtrusive, can't see any reason why anyone wouldn't be happy there. The flat was great and so convenient for moving about the old town, we felt like natives at the end of our stay, even though we lost at football!

The information provided on Airbnb is accurate to a fault. The apartment is in a brilliant location. Just metres off the main square it is in easy walking distance to cafes, bars, restaurants, supermarket, boulangerie, patisserie and any number of historic sites. The apartment itself is roomy and comfortable for 2 people. It is decorated in period style the 2 main rooms are testimony to this. The kitchen and bathroom were more than adequate for a holiday letting. If driving parking in the square a short walk away is excellent advise provided by the host. We paid for a pass for 8 days that gave us 24 hour access and all for 20 euros. It made exploring the area so much easier not having to hunt around for parking at the end of the day. The hosts were most accommodating and certainly helped make this an enjoyable week's stay with great tips and advice. The accommodation was perfect in a great location. I will say that there is some street noise (late afternoon/early evening) and given we are in an ancient town with narrow streets you'd expect that. But it is not excessive and it did not impact on our sleep in anyway. Would we come back? Absolutely.

The Elegant Living apartment in Carcassonne was perfect for our visit and Alex and Pippa were great hosts. Pippa met us on arrival at the apartment and gave us all the information we needed for our week's stay in the apartment and gave us lots of information of the area including restaraunts. Alex sent us brochures on the apartment, the area and available parking prior to our arrival and responded promptly to any enquiries we had both prior and during our stay. The apartment was clean, warm, central and exactly as it was advertised.
