Walking in the district of Montorgueil (2nd district), it is above all dive into the rich and old history of the Halles of Paris, vast market which during 8 centuries nourished Paris and the Parisians, before leaving definitely for Rungis in 1969 .
Indissociable des Halles, "Montorgueil" has developed following the successive transformations of the market, making this area a zone at once popular and modern, an atmosphere that we still find today.
This walk will take you into the history of this district, one of the oldest in Paris, to discover its different evolutions. You will also enjoy the pleasant atmosphere of a small shopping village reserved for the vast majority of pedestrians.
Start of the walk in front of Saint-Eustache Church. Built in the early 16th century instead of a small chapel to accommodate a growing population, this magnificent church is a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance styles. At the same time as the new Halles commissioned by Napoleon III in the middle of the 19th century, the architect Victor Baltard will be in charge of redeveloping the Saint-Eustache Church following a fire in 1844.
Appointment rue rue Montorgueil. This pedestrian street is the shopping heart of the district, and some shops are among the oldest in Paris. At No. 38 in the street, for example, is the Montorgueil snail, the 20th century favorite of Guitry, Proust, Dali ... and whose ceiling you can see at the entrance is the painting that adorned the room. to eat Sarah Bernhardt!
At 51 rue Montorgueil is the Boulangerie-Pastry Stohrer, the oldest pastry shop in Paris. Stohrer was the pastry chef of Marie Leszczynska, wife of King Louis XV (1710 - 1774).
