Anyone visiting York won't find a better place to stay than Squirrel Nest. It is a hidden gem surrounded by tranquil countryside. The hosts are helpful but not intrusive and the homemade cake and fresh laid eggs a lovely touch. The decor is e exquisite and the personal decorative touches make the apartment a special place to be. Truly a jewel of a place to stay!

Had a wonderful long weekend at Squirrels Nest. It was very hard to leave! Jill was a fantastic host who had put effort into all aspects of making us feel welcome and 'home from home'. The accommodation was as described (delicious cake - definite bonus), travel directions helpful and useful recommendations regarding exploring both York and surrounding areas. Would highly recommend staying here and hope to be able to return again some day. A great place to get a country feel but on the door step of York!

"Squirrel Nest" is fabulous! We had the good fortune to spot Jill and Steve's apartment on the day it was first listed. It turned out to be even better than pictured/described. The location feels delightfully rural but is still convenient for access to York. The apartment is light, spacious, south-facing and superbly equipped. Jill and Steve could not have made us more welcome. They are friendly, obliging and considerate hosts, discreetly in the background but always available when needed. There were fresh roses in each room, and in the kitchen a home-baked cake, home baked bread, butter, conserves, fresh eggs! and a bottle of wine. We just loved this place and wished we did not have to get back to London. Ian and Janet

An absolute gem for a relaxing break in York. So many positives - where to start?! The location is ideal. Within easy reach of the beautiful City of York and yet on the rural fringe with calming views of the open countryside. The chickens, birds, rabbits and...of course...squirrels make you feel you are in a rustic oasis, but the urban facilities are only a short walk/drive/bus ride away. The quality of the accommodation & facilities within are the best we have experienced on our various stays in the UK since we moved to Sydney. A very comfortable bed (big tick); a fantastic shower (huge tick); excellent kitchen area & every piece of equipment you might need for a short stay or even the 2 weeks we stayed this time (another big tick); a well thought out, compact dining area; a very home-y, comfy living area with sofa, radio/CD player, TV, collection of DVDs, books, games (all good, although watch your head if you're tall like me - ouch!); plenty of space for storage, clothes, toiletries, including a warm cupboard for hanging & drying; good laundry facilities; 'green' considerations with recycling & composting; and a lovely balcony to sit on if the weather permits (remember you're ooop north now though, unless you're from the real north like me - in which case you can sit outside with your vest on!). The owners, Jill & Steve are quality as well. They try to make sure everything in the accommodation is high quality product, well-presented & maintained, and then add a high quality service, with that combination of proactivity & responsiveness we all want. They think of most things, anticipating your needs, but are also quick to respond if you find any gaps that need filling. The place is so well stocked, we were reduced to thinking "hmmm - could do with a long-handled shoe horn"! The only problem we had was with the wi-fi wandering off from time-to-time, but that is the unfortunate side-effect of being on the rural fringe of the City. No doubt in time, the technology infrastructure will improve and give Jill & Steve the opportunity to take away this frustration for those like me who feel the need to 'stay connected'. If you want to switch off from your devices on your break, Squirrel Nest is perfect.

This apartment is a perfect place to explore York itself and the surrounding area. It's on the outskirts of the city but within an easy 20 min bike ride, much of it along the river. There are bikes to borrow, if you like. The flat is very well-appointed and Jill has been very thoughtful in providing everything one might need and have forgotten! It's spotlessly clean and everything works brilliantly. It is cozy in winter and, I imagine, the deck, with views out over the surrounding countryside, is a lovely place to unwind after a busy day or relax over breakfast.

A perfect getaway for a few days! Close to York and yet secluded and in the countryside at the same time. A beautiful flat filled with thoughtful and lovely items for your stay.

Everything about our stay at Squirrel's Nest was perfect. The apartment was clean, tidy, well furnished and well equipped - it had everything you would need (including fresh eggs, bread and milk!) Located on the edge of the city meant that we had beautiful countryside surroundings, but nevertheless was easy to get into the city centre - a short drive/cycle. Jill and Steve were great hosts who made us feel very welcome! Could not recommend staying here enough!

We are from York in the UK. We like to visit art galleries, museums and any local places of interest We are also interested in local music and culture, and traditional local food. We like cycling so always look for places where we can hire bikes.

We also enjoy hosting guests at our own apartment 'Squirrel Nest' in York where we have met lots of great Airbnb guests!
