The experience was far from charming. The first hurdle was to climb two sets of steep, narrow circular stairs, lugging a suitcase. The 'charming' epithet died right there. You have to be able-bodied just to get to the front door. Inside, the decor of the apartment was spartan; the living room furniture consisted of a table and four folding chairs, on a bare wooden floor. There were no area rugs or pictures on the wall, and the lighting was provided one weak bulb. Similarly, the bedroom contained just a low double bed, with a duvet, and again no decorative touches or proper lighting. The kitchen appeared to be the best equipped room, although I never used it. The worst room was the 'bathroom', a narrow space about one metre wide; it had a cracked handbasin, a rotted window, and a disgustingly filthy shower area, from which water splashed without restraint on to the wooden floor, which was already wet. The toilet seat would not stay up, because the toilet itself was not level. I was so appalled that I resolved to leave as soon as possible, but since it was growing dark, I decided to leave the next morning after first finding somewhere to eat. The owner intimated that there were lots of good restaurants in the area, but after I wandered around for an hour or so, I found nothing but a couple of grubby establishments, each with just a handful of customers. Eventually I settled on a grimy Indian restaurant, with possibly some of the worst food I have ever encountered. I left at the crack on dawn the next morning, and found a truly charming hotel in the Arts et Metiers area, luxuriously appointed, brightly lit, with a flat-screen TV, breakfast included, and much closer to the centre of Paris than the other flat claimed to be. The cost of this hotel was EXACTLY the same as the hovel I had just vacated. I cannot recommend anyone to stay at the first place.
Romain was a great host. It was easy to arrange the check in time. He was flexible and communicative, something I always appreciate with airbnbs! The apartment was perfect, very well located, 5 minute walk from a metro station which will get you anywhere you need to go in Paris. The area and the apartment building felt really safe, the apartment was fully equipped with everything we needed and Romain was a friendly host. I would definitely recommend his place!
Romain was a very kind and considerate host and was always accessible if we had any questions. The neighbourhood is quiet but just a few minutes away from great restaurants (Dolce Romana on Avenue des Gobelins was a good find) and several supermarkets (Franprix, etc). Very good value and a conscientious host. Cheers!
