Where you’ll be

Paty do Alferes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Paty do Alferes is a municipality in the state Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It covers an area of 319,103 km². Its inhabitants are called patienses, being one of the most important cultural centers of the state.

The consecration of local agricultural production takes place annually in the week of the holiday of Corpus Christi with the holding of the Tomato Festival, when the district of Avelar receives an average flow of 40,000 people per day.

The party originated from a technical week promoted by technicians from the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Company of Rio de Janeiro (EMATER-RIO) and CEASA-RJ in the Producer Market in 1979. The initial goal was only to hold a technical enhancement meeting of Ensign Paty's farmers with entertainment side events.

Two years later, inspired by the Grape Festival of Caxias do Sul, in Rio Grande do Sul, the event became known as the Tomato Festival. It was still a small fraternization of farmers and agricultural technicians, where the great attractions were magicians and animal auctions.

In the year of Paty do Ensign's emancipation, 1987, the Tomato Festival passed to the municipal administration. Since then, renowned artists have been hired to perform at the events.

With the inauguration of Amaury Monteiro Pullig Exhibition Park in Avelar district in 1995, the Tomato Festival became the largest of its kind in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

In addition to concerts by famous artists, the program includes agricultural activities such as the Tomato Milk and Quality Contest, sporting events such as Volleyball and Rustic Racing Tournaments, tomato cooking contests and the election of the Queen of the Party.

Aldeia de Arcozelo
See main article: Aldeia de Arcozelo
It was the former Fazenda Freguesia, where the most important slave revolt in the region took place, led by Manoel Congo. Then it became the property of the Viscount of Arcozelo.

João Pinheiro Filho, its last owner, donated, in 1958, Fazenda Arcozelo to Ambassador Pascoal Charlemagne to create a permanent center of theatrical artistic achievements, where - under his management - there were some editions of THE FESTIVAL DE TEATRO DE ESTUDANTES organized by him.

Currently, the Village of Arcozelo is administered by the National Art Foundation of the Ministry of Culture - being abandoned in precarious state of conservation, the result of disregard by the authorities, with visitation suspended.

Mother Church [14]
The Mother Church of Our Lady of Conception of Pati do Alferes is an architectural monument deeply representative of the most important historical period in the region. It was listed in 1973 by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute.

Its construction began in 1840, from a donation of land and financial resources from the commanding chief captain Manuel Francisco Xavier and his wife, Dona Francisca Elisa Xavier, future Baroness of Soledade.

It was built in colonial style with wooden structures and wooden front walls. Its interior is decorated with important pieces of furniture and icons, such as the images of Our Lady of Conception and Our Lady of the Rosary, both from the 19th century, which still adorn the altars today.

It was inaugurated on May 31, 1844 and was administered by the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Conception. Administration by Franciscan monks began in 1937.

Friar Aurélio Stulzer, one of his most active parish priests, carried out reforms to commemorate the centenary in 1944. With the restoration, an image of Our Lady of Mercy, made in the eighteenth century, was brought to the mother church, which was patron saint of Fazenda Piedade, belonging to Colonel Francisco Peixoto de Lacerda Werneck, the second Baron of Pati do Alferes. On this occasion, Praça da Matriz and Galeria dos Fundadores were also inaugurated.

The main church also has the Cultural Space Friar Aurelio Stulzer, which can be visited on Saturdays and Sundays from sixteen to seventeen hours and thirty minutes.

Currently deteriorated, infested with termites, the church is closed by order of IPHAN in a sorry state of abandonment.

Masses are precariously being held in the Parish Hall next to the Mother Church.

The Emperor's Way, which penetrates the middle of the Atlantic Forest, is used by lovers of ecology to practice sports such as hiking, horseback riding or biking.

It originates from part of the Caminho Novo de Minas opened by Garcia Rodrigues Paes in the early 18th century.A 1810 document mentions a path that could only be traveled on horseback or on foot, crossing the Atlantic Forest between Pati do Alferes and Córrego Seco, now Petrópolis.

From the creation of Petrópolis in 1843 and the arrival of German immigrants in 1845, the provincial government authorities decided to turn the road into a wagon road. The report of the president of the province of Rio de Janeiro, dated May 5, 1851, justified the works due to the need to supply the colony with the agricultural production of those more fertile and less rugged fields, in addition to stimulating the manufacture of cars and coaches.

The original project underwent several governments and numerous corrections until, in 1858, the work was completed under the guidance of engineer Otto Reimarus, with a route of 33 km counted from the Contour Road.

Charles Ribeyrolles walked the Emperor's Path as soon as it was opened and described it in his book Picturesque Brazil citing panoramas that are splendid paintings and magnificent scenery that overlook Guanabara Bay. [15]

The Emperor D. Pedro II traveled several times on horseback riding, hence the name Emperor's Path.

Centro Cultural Maestro José Figueira
The artistic and cultural production of Paty do Alferes has the structure of the Centro Cultural Maestro José Figueira, one of the largest in the region.

In addition to the bold architecture, in its modern and versatile facilities there are several events in the municipality: exhibitions, theatrical performances, courses, video exhibition, etc.

The library consists of more than 40,000 titles, a room specialized in Brazilian literature and internet access with monitoring.

Inside the complex, there is a 110-seat theatre used sporadically.

Cachaça Museum
The Cachaça Museum is the first in its kind in the country. [lacks sources] Its creators, Iris and Iale Renan, inaugurated the museum in 1991.

It took years of research in libraries and acquisition of hundreds of bottles purchased in all corners of Brazil to assemble a vast and peculiar collection, which is presented to its visitors along with paintings, collections of chronicles and articles, specialized books, popular trovas, an old mini-alambique, among many other attractions in the history of cachaça.

At the Cachaça Museum, there is also an artisanal brandy industry, two cellars and a bar for free tasting.

As it is a private institution, visits are charged.

Mesh Lane
The mesh is a widespread game among the local community, being held several tournaments. Currently[when?] there are approximately sixty players registered in the Ensign's Pati Mesh Club. [lack of sources] The rules used are somewhat different from those of the rest of Brazil and Portugal.[lack of sources]

The track of the mesh is forty meters long. The knitwear commonly worn by Ensign Pati players are rectangular in weight ranging from five hundred to 2,800 grams.

The mesh can be played individually or in pairs. The game consists of reaching the highest number of points by dropping the pins or staying within one of the two concentric circles (the smallest with forty cm in diameter and the largest with 1.30 cm in diameter) where the two pins are placed and demarcated at the end of the track. Each pin dropped equals ten points. The player, being able to put the mesh in the smaller circle, gains twenty points and, in the larger circle, gains ten points, regardless of whether he drops the pin or not. The sum of the plays determines the winner and the matches are defined by the number of points, with a maximum of one hundred points, in the doubles tournament.

Currently poorly maintained, in a precarious state of conservation and without activities.
