EXPERIENCE THE LUXURY OF DISCONNECTING! Welcome to The Mountain Shire, our mountain-top AirBnB village nestled in the Nantahala National Forest and surrounded by the Great Smoky Mountains. Quartermoon is a small restful cabin at the top of our mountain. This is the perfect location for you to nest at night as you venture in the day to explore the magical forests surrounding you. Hiking, waterfalls, great restaurants, breweries, museums, gem mining - all right here in beautiful Franklin NC.

The space
"No tv, no internet, no depressing news... just a full moon and beautiful stars in the sky."

Without phone service, wifi, or tv, this listing is a form of elevated camping, and is geared toward nature lovers. When designing Quartermoon Cabin, we intended for nature to be the focus. When you walk inside your cabin, we don't want you to leave the outdoors outside, but instead still feel nature's magic in each room.

The cabin has one bedroom and a futon couch in the living room, so it can sleep 4 people, making it a lovely choice for families or groups of friends. The bedroom has a large pillow-top queen bed, and the living room futon folds down into a full bed. All beds have provided linens and extra pillows.

You can enjoy a tiny, retro-style kitchen that has so much character. It comes stocked with dishes, utensils, and cookware, as well as dish soap, cooking oil, and salt/pepper. There is a mini refrigerator, mini range-oven, microwave, and double farmhouse-style sink. You will also have a coffee maker along with coffee, creamer, and sugar. We hope to have provided you with everything you will need to enjoy this adorable kitchen, and be able to cook delicious meals during your stay if you wish. We are very proud of our live edge, eat-in counter top attached to the kitchen, which is perfect seating for one person to enjoy a cup of coffee.

In the living room, there is a three-person bar table with stools for enjoying your meals right by the window. For relaxation, there is an indoor, hanging hammock chair, which is an ideal place to read a book. We have provided a deck of playing cards as well as some other games, but we encourage you to bring any other games you might enjoy.

The bathroom is newly-renovated with a shower-tub combination. We provide you with toilet paper, hand soap, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and towels.

Additionally, attached to your cabin is a large screened-in porch that has a small table and two beautiful teak chairs, and a magical bed that hangs from the ceiling, the most peaceful and unique place to enjoy the outdoors.

This cabin can be rented together with our other listing, "Featherwood Folly", to accommodate larger groups. Our two newly-renovated, historic cabins are located right down the drive way from each other, and when booked together can sleep groups up to eight people.

Here is a list of my top recommendations:

Our Favorite Hikes:

Pickens Nose -
Its .75 miles each way with several incredible overlook points. The most famous of which is "the nose". It is just before the final overlook, and it will be on your right hand side.

Standing Indian Campground -
This campground and park is very close to the Mountain Shire, and it is filled with beautiful trails and creeks. It has access to the Nantahala River in addition to the Appalachian Trail.

Rufus Morgan Trail and Falls -
Its just over a mile loop, and it leads you onto a little wooden bridge that crosses over a babbling stream and to a very beautiful waterfall at the top.

Wayah Bald Lookout Tower -
This is out that same way and the overlook is breathtaking. You can drive all the way up to it, and you can walk a portion of the Appalachian trail if you want.

Little Tennessee River Greenway -
This is a cute scenic walking trail located in downtown Franklin, running beside the peaceful Little Tennessee River. You will cross bridges and walk through parks and gardens. You will also pass by a coffee shop and one of our local breweries along the way.

I would also recommend just walking down Franklin's Main Street in downtown. We have some great little spots for coffee/beer, shopping, and 4 great little museums!

Other activities in Franklin:

A scenic drive up to Highlands NC via Highlands Rd - You will have gorgeous mountain and stream views, and you will pass several waterfalls that are right off of the road. Dry Falls is magnificent and definitely worth a stop along the way. Once you reach Highlands, there are many great shops and restaurants.

Franklin is known as the "Gem Capital of the World", and gem mining is a very popular activity around here. If you have never done this, I would definitely recommend trying it. Although, you should be prepared to get muddy.
Here is our favorite mine: Cowee Gift Shop And Mason Mine - open year-round - 5315 Bryson City Rd, Franklin, NC
We also have 2 gem shop/museums located on Main Street in downtown. One of them is located in the old historic jail!

Skyvue Ranch - alpaca farm! Call ahead to schedule a visit - 179 Harvest Cove Rd, Franklin, NC

Other Nearby Activities:

Just over the NC / GA state line:

Goats On The Roof - yes, this is exactly what it sounds like, and its amazing! - 3026 US-441, Tiger, GA

Tiger Drive-In Theater - open March through November - 2956 Old 441 S, Tiger, GA

Tallulah Falls, Georgia -
This is a massive gorge with beautiful raging rivers and falls. There are several challenging hikes throughout the park, but the views you will find are quite worth it.

Moonrise Distillery - Craft whiskey distillery with tours and tastings - 31 Webb Rd, Clayton, GA

Restaurant recommendation for this area - The Dillard House - southern food served family style, basically a buffet but they bring it all to your table! (come with an appetite!!) - 768 Franklin St, Dillard, GA

Over the mountain in Bryson City:

Deep Creek - river tubing in the summer, and just an awesome place to hike in the cooler months, and there are three beautiful waterfalls to see here - 1090 W Deep Creek Rd, Bryson City, NC

A luxurious train ride on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad - 45 Mitchell St, Bryson City, NC

Restaurant recommendation for this area - Mountain Perks - this is an amazing café to stop at for a quick bagel sandwich or giant wrap and a delicious specialty coffee - 9 Depot St, Bryson City, NC

A few more of our favorite nearby cities to day trip to:

Cherokee, NC - (50 minute drive)
Native American history with related activities and a large casino

Helen, GA - (1 hour 15 minute drive)
A German town with great food, shopping, lazy river tubing, and waterfall hikes

Asheville, NC - (1 hour 15 minute drive)

The local brews:

The Lazy Hiker Brewery - they usually have a food truck, a fire pit going, and some sort of entertainment - 188 W Main St, Franklin, NC

Curahee Brewery - situated in a beautiful location right on the Little Tennessee River and the Greenway (a scenic walking trail in town) - 100 Lakeside Dr, Franklin, NC

The Rathskellar - not a brewery, but a really neat underground coffee house and pub that serves local brews and delicious fresh baked goods. They also usually have entertainment and games - 58 Stewart St, Franklin, NC

We have tons of great food around here, but here's our top favorite restaurants that I know are currently open:

Cafe Rel - fine dining Italian-fusion (don't let its location discourage you!) - 459 E Main St, Franklin, NC

Fat Buddies - delicious BBQ! - 311 Westgate Plaza Franklin, NC

Fatz Café - basically the southern version of an Applebee's - 107 Sawmill Village Ln, Franklin, NC

Motor Company Grill - 1950s themed diner serving up burgers and shakes - 86 W Main St, Franklin, NC

Thai Paradise - Very tasty, authentic Thai food (takeout only right now) - 3078 Georgia Rd, Franklin, NC

El Charro - Mexican food with great specials + beer & margaritas! - 201 Highlands Rd, Franklin, NC

Kountry Kitchen - that classic comfort diner food place - 351 Carolina Mountain Dr, Franklin, NC

828 Café - Latin-American breakfast and brunch - 228 NE Main St, Franklin, NC

Guest access
You will have full, private access to the cabin during your stay.

Other things to note
This listing does not have TV, WIFI, or reliable cellphone service. This location is best for adventurers that are looking to disconnect and to be immersed in nature. It is a perfect place to enjoy some peace and quiet while still being a short drive from town.

Please no smoking in the home or in the screened in porch.

At this time, we do not allow campfires.

Being that this listing is placed right on the edge of the mountain, there are many areas on the property that are not safe for children to run and play. Everyone needs to be cautious when walking along the edge of the mountain as there is no safety railing.

My husband and I are airbnb hosts in Stuart, Florida and Franklin, North Carolina. Being able to host and meet people from all over the world and from all walks of life is an honor, and a part of my life that I truly love and cherish. Having the opportunity to make people happy makes my heart so full. I love getting to know my guests, finding out the things they enjoy, and helping them plan their ideal vacation. My goal is to give every guest an experience they will never forget, and a second home to which they want to return again and again. My husband and I love to travel and try new things! We have stayed in many airbnbs in the US, as well as in Costa Rica and Japan. Additionally, we have traveled the UK and Norway. When we explore a new place, we love to go off the beaten path and immerse ourselves in local culture, especially local foods. I try to use what I experience and learn in each place we visit as a tool to continuously improve my listings and my hosting. We cannot wait to welcome you, and help you build your dream getaway to the sandy beaches of Florida or the smoky mountains of North Carolina.
