Beautiful Bergamo: We stayed with Enrica in Città Alta, Bergamo, during a snowy February in 2012. Riding up the funicular, and looking out over twinkling Città Bassa below, with the Alps looming majestically in the distance, made a lasting impact. We always wanted to return and knew that Entro le Mura was a lovely B&B – and it didn't disappoint for our second visit. B&B Comfort: This time we stayed in the two-room apartment, which has good-sized twin and double rooms. It is also clean, spacious and light with a useful communal seating area. It's on the ground floor so is easily accessible, and you have access to a pretty garden with impressive views. This is also where breakfast is served. We didn't eat breakfast – based on past experience we wanted to leave our bellies empty for the sheer volume of food and drink we’d be consuming! Virtually every other shop is a café, bar or restaurant and the pasticceria windows are filled with enticing pasticcini, focaccia and the signature domed yellow ‘polenta e osei’ cakes of Bergamo. Staying at Enrica’s: this was easy and comfortable and communication was good. We received clear instructions on access codes/check in etc. via text and email. For some guests the lack of WiFi on the ground floor may be an issue, but it wasn't a problem for us. Welcoming Host: Enrica and her family(?) are very friendly and hospitable, but also give guests space to come and go. She recommended some great restaurants to us and the two we tried we loved! Cooperativa Il Circolino had an unexpected hidden garden and was filled with local families sharing steak, polenta and wine under a vine covered terrace, overlooking the countryside. Da Mimmo was another hit – again very popular with locals, and although we had a long wait to be seated (booking highly recommended!) it was well worth it, with friendly waiters, a free glass of prosecco and delicious food our reward. Beer: The craft beer scene is starting to emerge in Italy and one of our favourite places was Osteria della Birra at Piazza Lorenzo Mascheroni. Supping Grunge IPA accompanied by a platter of local meats and cheeses, slowly reviving after a hot walk up to the Castello di San Vigilio was a high point, if you'll pardon the pun. Enchanting City: I can't be effusive enough about the magic of Bergamo and Città Alta - whether rising out of the snow, or in leafy summer splendour this city has a fairy tale quality. Even the giant doors lining the cobbled streets seem to support this. The cool sanctuary and calm of Enrica’s place is part of that charm, and I would happily return again. Maybe next time in autumn. Bergamo Città Alta Dos and Don’ts: • DON’T visit if you don’t like walking up and down hills. A lot. • DO try the slightly alarming luminous orange cocktail that you will see everyone drinking - this is an Aperol Spritz and...

When, in 2003, I decided to open my home to unknown people I was a little curious and very worried.
Today I am lucky to have met many people: I learned a lot from the way they behave and talk, I lived through what has happened and is happening around us through them and their stories.

A simple and informal welcome, clean rooms, wonderful location and a garden for your breakfast: my home is your home in Città Alta.
