A disappointing stay at Clyde Street, Hout Bay. Booked 7 months earlier based on the photographs and description on Airbnb we had high expectations for this property when we arrived on Christmas Eve. Unfortunately the first thing we saw was a dirty and unusable swimming pool. Since we had 2 children and were looking forward to a restful 5 days at the end of our touring holiday this was a blow. (The owner did send a brief email on the day of arrival apologising the pool pump had broken but this was not seen until after we had arrived and I had contacted her by text). There were also issues inside the property particularly in one of the bedrooms where one of the walls was covered in damp, grey cement. There was dust in the air and covering the already stained carpet. The bedroom window had a large crack and hole which seemed dangerous and should be replaced. We had concerns about security as the front door jammed and was difficult to both lock and unlock. The lock on one of the patio doors to the back of the property was broken. We had problems with the electricity too as the kitchen power tripped when additional appliances were used although this was easily rectified once we found the switch box. On the positive side we enjoyed the outdoor space and Braai area, my teenagers liked DSTV and wifi and the master room was lovely – light, airy and with great views. When we got back home I sent the owner our feedback with photographs of the issues and received a further apology in which she explained she had been let down by her builders. I do understand that this can happen and feel uncomfortable criticising someone's family home. I like the concept of Airbnb and staying in quirky, individual properties. We don’t want 5 star but do want safe, secure, clean accommodation which lives up to its description and price tag. However, we paid nearly US$ 1000 for a five night stay and don’t think we received value for money on this occasion. I know that the property is the owner’s home and is not run as a professional holiday let but I think more could have been done to ensure the property was ready for guests or to apologise for the shortcomings once we arrived. The standard of accommodation is usually very good in South Africa (this was our sixth visit to this wonderful country).

What a beautiful home! Centrally located close to all the shops and wharf with only a short drive to Konstantia and Cape Town CBD. The house has absolutely everything you might need and the upstairs bedroom is filled with light and surrounded by mountain views. if you are after peace and tranquility this is it
