Writer’s Block retreat is the perfect romantic getaway for couples or a creative retreat for writers and artists. Set on 27 acres and surrounded by gums and chestnut trees, this private rural retreat is within a 10-minute drive to cafes, restaurants, shops, picturesque walks and the famous Puffing Billy. The Yarra Valley is only a 30-minute scenic drive to local wineries, farmers markets and farm to table restaurants. Fully functional kitchen and laundry. Perfect for short- or long-term stays.

The space
This beautiful rural retreat is the ideal place to unwind and relax. Handcrafted from recycled stone, wood and brick, Writer’s Block has everything you need to slow down and connect to nature. Old meets new with a modern bathroom and fully functional kitchen beautifully contrasted by a bespoke stone wall and wood fireplace. Enjoy yoga or a cup of tea on the back deck and listen to the sounds of magpies, rosellas, cockatoos and king parrots.

Writer’s Block is in an ideal tourist location; close to Olinda with cafes and shops, Sherbrooke Forest, Puffing Billy (leaving from Belgrave or Emerald and arriving at Gembrook), Yarra Valley, Healesville Sanctuary, Macclesfield Trout Farm, Silvan Tulip Festival in September, Emerald Lake park, many stunning walks and these are just a few things you can enjoy in and around the picturesque Dandenong Ranges.

You will have the entire retreat to yourself during your stay. Our home is 500 metres away and is not visible from the retreat. If you need to contact us please do this by phone.
You will be able to let yourself in. We will leave instructions where to find the key.

Walks
• The Arboretum in Olinda is absolutely stunning. Majestic gums, pine needle paths to wander along and the serenity of nature. This is our favourite walk. Walks of between 4 and 6km.

• Stroll around the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden (formerly the National Rhododendron Gardens) in Olinda. Stunning during spring and entry is free.

• Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens near Kallista. Beautiful anytime but extremely picturesque during autumn.

• The beautiful Sherbrook Forest with walks leaving from Grant’s Picnic Grounds. Sherbrook Forest is within walking distance of the small hamlet of Kallista which boasts the best pizza place in the hills, Mad Raven.

• Emerald Lake: a delightful walk around the beautiful tranquil Emerald Lake. Begin from the Nobelius Packing Shed. Approx. 3.5 km

• The Puffing Billy Track walk from Emerald to Cockatoo. Approx.12 km return

• The Puffing Billy Track walk from Cockatoo to Gembrook. Approx.12 km return

• Warburton trail leaving from Silvan is only 15 minutes away by car; walk as far as you’d like as the trail goes all the way to Warburton! Great for bike riding.

• Before the cinema, try the Indian Street Food in Belgrave or have drinks and see a band at the Sookie Lounge in Belgrave.

Things to Do
• Number one for us is go to the Cameo Cinema in Belgrave for a more old-fashioned 70s cinema experience. LOVE the Cameo!
• Shop in Olinda for all sorts of interesting wares, oddities, jewellery and clothes.
• Go on the Puffing Billy from Belgrave to Gembrook but for a shorter trip catch the train in Emerald and do the return trip Emerald-Gembrook-Emerald.
