Located on Active Pass, the spectacular marine passage separating Galiano and Mayne islands, InTheBluff - Galiano’s Oceanside Log House offers one of the most stunning outlooks in the Southern Gulf Islands. With 2 bedrooms, it accommodates up to 4.

The space

InTheBluff is situated cliff-top overlooking the spectacular Active Pass. The log house not only has its own private 15 forested acres, it is adjacent to Mathews Point Regional Park (with trail access to Beach below) and Bluff Park, both of which offer miles of hiking trails and numerous spectacular view points.

Very comfortable 2-storey artisan log home with the master bedroom (queen bed), 4-piece bathroom and a TV/sitting room upstairs. The master bedroom and TV/sitting room each feature walk-outs to view balconies. The ground level features the front living/dining room flowing to the main deck via a set of French doors. The living room has a wonderful Tulikivi soapstone fireplace that radiates warmth. Firewood is provided. The country kitchen is well equipped and the adjacent 2-piece powder room also contains laundry facilities. The smaller second bedroom (queen bed) is also on the ground floor.

The owners reside a short distance away and are also available much of the time via telephone and email to answer questions and make recommendations.

It's paradise - a completely private cliff-top log home accessed via a 1/2 kilometer long driveway through the forest while being at the south end of Galiano in very close proximity to island amenities.

Car, cycling and hiking are the best ways to get around Galiano Island. The closest store for provisions is 3 kilometres (Sturdies Bay garage).

InTheBluff is rural - we are on a private well and septic system and respectively request that guests be very comfortable but preserve water and minimize on any chemicals/items put down the drain.

As much as we love pets, we are not able to accommodate them at InTheBluff. We are a non smoking home and ask that anyone smoking outside take extreme care as we are on a very dry bluff in a more often than not very dry forest.
We do not request an additional cleaning fee but we do ask that guests (with cars) take their recycling and garbage off island with them particularly if they can easily dispose of it in the city.

We had a great weekend at in the bluff. The cabin and surroundings are beautiful and the view is really something to behold! Lawrence was easy to contact encase we needed anything even though our stay was trouble free. It would definitely be on our list to come back to!

This is by far the most majestically wild and scenic places we have ever stayed. The deer will eat out of your hand, and the Bald Eagles might if you have salmon. It is so peaceful, except when the ferry blows it's horn, and they only operate during the day. We took a book to read, but the sights were so fantastic, we never opened it.

This getaway was everything we'd hoped for and more. The cottage (which is rather large and spacious) was at once luxurious and authentic. Location was stunning. It's tucked away in the woods, and opens in the back to a stunning view of the pass, where the ferries cross paths on a regular basis. We had everything we needed to feel right at home in the kitchen, bath and bedrooms. The hosts were very kind, welcoming, informative, and responsive.

We LOVED LOVED LOVED InTheBluff, and Galiano! We came on our honeymoon and the place was exactly what we were looking for. The view is amazing, and pictures do not do it justice. The house itself was perfect with all the amenities we could ask for, very comfortable, and plenty of space for 2 or 4. We stayed in July, which is prime whale watching time. Thanks to tips from Lawrence, we were able to spot 2 orca pods from the deck, and get down to the water soon enough to watch them come by closer (dream come true). Galiano itself was just the right speed - a few places to eat out, very friendly, lots of exploring - but not crowded. We hope to come again!

I think our feelings about our InTheBluff can be summed up by our reaction to having to leave it: You could barely pry us off the deck, and I think if any of us could have conjured up another week, or two...we would have done so in a heartbeat. This is one of those places where the pictures don't do it justice. The view is a sort of psychic glue that keeps you rooted in place, gazing for hours a eagles, vultures, swallows, deer, and if you are lucky and in season (as we were) orcas. The cabin is spacious and comfortable for four, with the master bedroom and bath pretty luxurious. There is lots of space to spread out in the living/fireplace room below, and a reading/entertainment loft above. So it would probably be just as nice in bad weather as in good. A TV and DVDs were provided, but we could never bring ourselves to turn it on. The kitchen is well equipped and we cooked in a lot. There is a great market on Georgeson Bay Rd. near the Thai place which had good produce, dairy, specialties, and staples, and beer/wine are also available on the island. Lawrence and Janusz were terrific hosts - friendly and very responsive before and during our stay, and sharing many ideas about what to see and do. Take advantage of their local knowledge - you will be glad you did. Highlights of our stay included visits to the Saturday farmer's market, local cemetery (really), artists' studios, and walks to Bodega Ridge, Pebble Beach, Mt. Galiano, along the bluff from the house to Matthews Beach and Bluff Park, and in Bellhouse Park (don't miss the eagles' nest there.) Bird-watching at the cabin was great - we saw 30 species from the deck. The cabin was easy to find and close to the ferry/Sturdies Bay and amenities, but far enough way to feel totally peaceful and secluded. Our one piece of advice: bring your own drinking water. Water is an issue on the island and the house water was fine for cooking but salty-tasting.

There are no words to describe how serene and peaceful this was. We could have stayed a week. We loved watching the ferries, the deer and just being able to stare at the water. A great place to relax and get away. We recommend bringing your own drinking water and groceries and just settling in. Everything else you need is there. Great fireplace and wonderful beds. We had a bit of a long wait between checkout and the ferry back. Just be aware that many places are closed on Mondays and close at 2:30, so plan your time accordingly. The bookshop is open late and has a great selection! We will be back for sure!

My partner and I live and work downtown Vancouver during the week and travel to home on Galiano Island every weekend. We may work in the yard all weekend but we love every minute of island life.
