Lovely rural home in spacious grounds in olive grove. 10 km from Greytown or Carterton. Two queen bedrooms w bathrooms. Single adults or children can use 2 sleeping platforms, a fold-up bed or floor mattresses . Extra toilet in laundry. Children love the outdoor space, bicycles, toys, sporting gear and bush walk. A wood-fired pizza oven or BBQ is available for guests. If cabin booked (rarely), cabin guests may use rear of house and kitchen briefly. Maximum 8 guests.

The space
The house is well insulated and has lots of doors and windows opening on to the three decks. Cool in summer and warm in winter. Great for inside-outside living. Guests must remember that the host lives here most of the time (except when Airbnb guests are here) and consequently the house is full of normal private possessions and the space in the fridge will be limited to 2 shelves and some door space. No freezer space but guests can buy a bag of ice locally and put in the chilly bin for extra refrigerated space. Since it is a private home it will not feel as sparkling clean as in a motel or hotel. Guests are required to avoid playing music loudly and close windows and doors if music is played.

Where you’ll be

Carterton, Wellington, New Zealand

The house is located in a rural area down a quiet road with views of the hills in all directions. Great for cycling. Usually there is only the sound of birds and an occasional train. But sometimes near-by farm animals can be heard--cows, sheep and deer. There is one other house on the property and guests must avoid loud music, etc. The towns Greytown and Carterton, with lovely cafes, restaurants & boutique shops, are each about a 10-minute drive away. Martinborough, the wine centre of the Wairarapa, is only about 25 minutes drive as are numerous reserves and sanctuaries, iconic rural pubs, beaches and picturesque lighthouses. .

I was raised on a dairy farm in the US and after work in Europe, the Carribean and travel, I married a man I met when in New Zealand on an exchange programme and we moved to Canada. We settled in NZ in 1974. After raising a family and a career in several NGOs and the public sector, I bought land in the heart of dairy country in the Wairarapa and planted an olive grove. I have a beautiful site which I love and continue to work on almost daily. I really enjoy sharing it with family, friends and homestay guests. It is my goal to make my guests feel like my personal guests. I have been lucky and travelled to many places so I feel I can make people from varied cultures feel welcome. We travel for fun and I try to contribute to my guests' fun. I confess to being a bit gregarious! And hungry for new experiences and meeting new people.

During your stay

I live here but I stay with my partner when the house is booked. . If there are only four guests and the guests want to have a shared breakfast, I return the first morning to provide a continental breakfast, answer questions and share any suggestions about interesting things to do in the Wairarapa. I am always available by phone.
