Where you’ll be

Ōkārito, West Coast, New Zealand

There are NO SHOPS in Ōkārito (the nearest grocery shop, bars and restaurants are in Franz Josef Glacier township, a short 25 minute drive away). Tui Cottage has NO TV (but Free Wi-Fi enables you to watch movies and programs online). Ōkārito has much to offer for those who love nature. Walking along the stunning beach in front of Tui Cottage at sunrise and sunset, with lovely walks that take in the West Coast's rugged coastline, beautiful lagoons, enchanting rainforest and National Park, with an abundance of bird life. We have four Eco-tour operators in the village offering excellent nature tours with extensive knowledge. Ōkārito Kayak tours also has a small café (with great home-made cakes, ice-cream and coffee!), Ōkārito Boat tours provide bird watching trips on the lagoon, Ōkārito Kiwi tours offer guided night walks to see Rowi Ōkārito Brown Kiwi, and Glacier Valley Eco Tours provide wonderful guided walks for small groups - all worth checking out. Multiple activities are close by in Franz Josef, including helicopter scenic flights over Aoraki Mt Cook and Mt Tasman, heli-hikes on the glacier, sky-diving, and horse trekking, so there's something for everyone.

My work: Ecologist
Fun fact: Work with endangered NZ parrots
Kia ora. My partner Richard and I have lived in Ōkārito since 1993. I'm an ecologist and did my PhD on kākāpo - an endangered NZ parrot. I met Richard whilst doing research and working with Rowi (Ōkārito brown kiwi) for the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC). Richard and I did all the renovation work on the original bach ourselves, and you can see Richard's love and attention to detail in the beautiful hand-crafted woodwork, quirky copper shower, and finishing touches, using sustainable eco-friendly recycled materials, wool insulation and non-toxic bio-paints. Although Ōkārito is home, we currently work for the Department of Conservation and live on Hauturu Little Barrier Island Nature Reserve with our two children, Mahina and Liam. (My profile image shows Liam, me and Mahina on the Franz Josef Glacier near Almer Hut). Only 5 people live on Little Barrier Island - our family and one other DOC Biodiversity Ranger! I'm more than happy to answer any of your questions via Airbnb or text message (I'm sometimes out doing fieldwork or working with the kākāpo team, so I may not be able to answer straight away as reception is limited on the island). Our friends Peggie and Kath help look after Tui Cottage for us, doing an amazing job keeping it lovely and clean. Peggie lives in Whataroa and Kath lives nearby in Ōkārito and can help with any immediate issues (although Kath often works in Franz Josef during the day). Tui Cottage is our home and we love coming home to Ōkārito. We hope you enjoy Tui Cottage, the amazing community, and the stunningly beautiful natural environment in Ōkārito as much as we do! : )
