We appreciate guests who don't stay 90% of their free time inside the room and they contribute to the community spirit

I booked 10 nights and did not meet Manu. I only met Ali on last day to hand over keys. However, they seemed to have "volunteers", one of whom is named Sam, received me and showed me my room. Sam was a good host. This accommodation is very near to eateries and convenience stores. However, the surrounding area where Manu's is located is a bit dirty, something that is beyond Manu's control. Manu's accommodation style feels more like a hostel due to the several rooms. I appreciate the room has a desk, chair, lamp, heater, wardrobe cupboard and the bed is comfortable and clean.

We had emailed with Manu and Ali prior to our arrival regarding what time we would be there, and we were told it wasn't a problem; that our room would be ready for us to drop our bags before starting our day. The room we were given was not ready, and instead we were told not to lock the room until they had finished cleaning it. We had things planned for the day, so had to drop our bags and go, hoping it would be fine. We returned to the pseudo-hostel later that night, and found people in our room, in bed, with all their gear and none of our own. Someone else (not Manu or Ali) explained they had given us the wrong room and showed us to another room....which was also occupied. Finally, on the third attempt, they gave us our room...which had been ready since before we arrived. No one explained where the facilities were, how checkout was to work, or what the Wi-fi code was. We wandered the halls until we found another guest who was able to tell us. The bathroom was flooded in the morning, and the whole place smelt of urine. The place was inexpensive, and you got what you paid for (aka not a whole lot). Thankfully, we had only booked one night. If we were in town for a second, we would have gone elsewhere.

I am really sorry Creighton that you had such a bad experience of staying 1 night. Let me make it clear as described on the profile that the place is under redecoration and so it is pretty busy with bookings and everything else on top which you were aware of already. Further it was very difficult to communicate with you in regards to updates and changes to situations and booking as your phone was not working and I tried many times to call you directly but to no avail to tell you about the room mix-up. The person who welcomed you was Sam our volunteer working here who had recently started so he also was learning the routine and everything here. Firstly I CLEARLY mentioned to you on our airbnb conversation to ask for ALI on arrival if it wasn't me that didn't open the door for you but instead you were in a rush to leave for the city centre as soon as the keys were given to you. So I'm guessing you neither introduced yourselves or asked for the name of the person that welcomed you? What a strange way to enter a property and meet someone. Secondly it was made very clear that your room might not be ready until 2pm so I can't understand why and how you think we could clean the room if you had locked it and left with the keys to the centre so fast upon arrival. What Sam should have told you was I have spare key set for all rooms so all your personal belongings were very safe whilst we cleaned and prepared room as I was locking whilst it was not being cleaned, so all your belongings were safe. Yes there was a mix up with the rooms unfortunately and your original room was already ready from the beginning but if your phone was working or you checked your airbnb message or you asked for ME after your arrival or introduced yourselves to Sam you would see I tried to contact you and tell you this about this mix up and none of it would have happened. You're personal belongings were safely secured in your original room locked with key and perfectly safe as you found after arrival from centre. I'm sorry Sam didn't provide you with the wi-fi password and you had to wander the corridors even though my room was opposite your room and I had been at the apartment the whole day. The person who gave you the wi-fi password after your wandering the corridor was the girl staying next door to your room and a friend of mines so I guess it wasn't so much wandering as she was next door room. We have daily cleaning every morning at 11am once everyone finished their showers and bathroom activities, if there was a flood of water and urine smell before this time there's not much we can do about individual housemates habits and poor attention to using the bathrooms. As you checked out before 11am I guess this was early morning by others but we definitely do not have this issues from the long term people staying here. I would advise for future that you bring a working phone when traveling and ask for the main person you booked with upon arrival unless otherwise stated, that will surely avoid any problems in the future. Wish you the best and hope you have better experiences for your future travels - Kind Regards ALI

Ali was really nice and helpful, and there was a cute kitten. Actually my room was not the room showed in the (URL HIDDEN) was still comfortable with a double bed.

Manu is a very warm host and making every effort to best meet the expectations of its guests! Ali one of the residents, and helping Manu, is also very welcoming and immediately puts at ease. The public rooms are pleasant, the bathrooms have been redone as a whole which now gives a good result. Well organized kitchen except no drawers that would be required. The area is ideally located! 5 min walk from the reservoir, 15min walk BroadStreet, and near the center, bus stops and supermarket. I recommend for the long term.

The place has just been renovated (October 2015), based on comments and advise left by previous guests but if you still have any specific issue you would like to highlight, please be kind enough to let me know this when you are here in person as direct feedback is also welcomed. Thanks

Floors have been re-carpeted, all walls have been re-painted, new front door, new locks, new flat screen TVs, brand new fridges, dryers, ceramic hobs, etc. Please note as the property itself is quite aged it cannot be modernized as most people understand without making major structural changes.

We have an online group where we keep in touch and we organize activities like dinners, etc

There's a great South East Indian/Sri Lankan restaurant (Spice Town, previously Chennai Dosa) close to my house where we like having dinner with our guests when it's possible.

Less than 1 minute walking you can find the 2 towers which inspired JRR Tolkien to write The Lord of the Rings (One of them is visible from the bedrooms) and 2 mins walking from The Oratory where he used to participate and 1 minute from The Plough and Harrow hotel where he stayed as well.

The property is located 5-6mins walking distance to the Botanical Gardens and 7-8mins walk to the Edgbaston Reservoir
