The Apple House at Hylands is an exquisite stand alone cottage in the grounds of the fine Arts and Crafts Pattinson House, 'Hylands', to the west of Kendal, Cumbria. Decorated using quality local materials and the skills of local crafts people, this bohemian retreat will allow you to completely unwind.
The Apple House is 12 minutes walk from Kendal town centre and 5 minutes walk to our local pub The Rifleman's Arms.

The space
You will enter Hylands and the Apple House up a wooded driveway. Your self-contained cottage is close to but detached from Hylands. The architect, Joseph Pattinson, brought together the Arts and Craft style with Westmorland vernacular, to create a family home for his brother the builder Abraham Pattinson. Abraham worked with local materials and crafts people to exemplify what is now recognised as an important strand of the international Arts and Crafts Movement.
At the top of the drive you can park, from there you can see the Apple House, just beyond the log shed and La'al Yam (another 4 person holiday cottage). The log shed is for your use and will provide you with plenty of wood for the wood burning stove.
The bedroom and en-suite are the first spaces you will see as you enter the Apple House, with the living areas upstairs. Oak furniture and soft linen bedding give this space the simple luxury we are trying to achieve. The en-suite shower room is light, fresh and new.
On climbing the stairs an enchanting bohemian space awaits you. The sitting, dining room and kitchen all sit under a vaulted ceiling. Moroccan lighting sets the mood, mixed with a simple open shelved oak kitchen, made from wood we have felled and seasoned ourselves. A wood burning stove and large corner sofa, Ercol table and chairs, SMEG red fridge and mini range make for a comfortable, warm, imaginative space. There are beautiful views across woodland, gardens and fells on three sides of this space.
Outside you have your own gravelled terrace with table and chairs, which catches the sun during the day with views over the south gardens. There is an acre of shared meadow and woods to the rear where you can BBQ and walk your dogs.
As an architect and sculptor we hope our blended skills bring to the Apple House a thoughtfulness in the details to help you have a really magical stay.
