I was instantly taken in by the beautiful pics of the Umah Bali villa and also the positive reviews, and booked it without much thought. And what a great choice it turned out to be! We are glad that we stayed with a real local host, Ngakan, who has worked his way up and runs the place with all his heart (and his hands- he cooks, cleans, drives the guest around!). We spent a considerable amount of time in his company, and he was always courteous, friendly and knowledgeable. He picked us up the airport, took us around for all our sightseeing trips and dropped us back on the last day, the phone in the villa is a great way to reach him and he is always around to help with anything his guests might need. The villa is surely one of the most serene accommodations i have stayed in , the greenery that surrounds the place is a true feast for the eye. We visited end August, and the weather was surprisingly cool and at times even 'cold' (by our South East Asian standards). The paddy fields had just been replanted and the water in them kept the temperature down. The villa is as beautiful as it is in the pics, if not more. All the rooms are tastefully furnished, and spotlessly clean. The only area which i found a bit lacking in cleanliness was the kitchen, it did not pass by exacting standards :) The pool, the sunbeds and sandbags together form the piece de resistance of the place and one can easily spend hours lounging on/around them. We also enjoyed sitting at the dining area and watching the day go by. The inclusive breakfast cooked by Ngakan's wife and another helper was yummy and sufficient to kick start the day. We particularly enjoyed the mixed fruit bowl and the banana coconut pancakes. We didn't avail their cooking service for dinner, but i am sure it would have been good too. Ngakan helped us arrange for in-villa massage for 2 evenings, and it was such a bliss! Our sightseeing trips were a breeze, thanks to Ngakan's efficient service and good suggestions. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay (my 5 year old son, loved the box of Jenga blocks at the villa, and spent most of his time building and toppling towers!) Too bad that it was a short stay, but we would definitely love to go back and would absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting Ubud (especially as a family with elders and kids, as it was in our case).
