About this listing
This enchanting "casa" sleeps up to 8 guests - 2 bedrooms in the main house and 2 in the guest house. With a relaxing backyard and pool, you won't want to go home. Longer term stays include weekly professional cleaning.
Welcome to La Casa de Alegria. We invite you to relax and enjoy our beautiful Mexican-style hacienda. Friends often tell us our house has a special spirit, and we agree. It features hand-plastered walls, painted tiles and unique architectural details, both inside and out. You will feel the ambiance as soon as you walk through the front courtyard and into the peaceful charm of the house.
The main 'casa' has two master suites with king beds and ensuite bathrooms, one with a gas fireplace. You will be very comfortable relaxing in the great room, complete with sofa and chairs, gas fireplace, TV with cable, baby grand piano, and dining table with seating for eight. The eat-in kitchen is probably my favorite room: whether you're gathered around the island or looking out at the fountain from the table, you'll feel right at home. The picture window facing the backyard overlooks the outdoor dining area and rose garden. Adjoining the kitchen is the library, a peaceful room to curl up in front of the gas fireplace with a good book. There is a powder room and large laundry room just down the hall.
The guest house has two bedrooms, each with its own full bath and walk-in shower, plus a comfortable living area ("sala") with a gas fireplace and kitchenette (under-counter refrigerator, sink, microwave, toaster overn, coffeemaker). It opens to the inviting, private backyard, with a pool (unheated), several patio areas for dining and relaxing (sunny and shaded), an outdoor wood-burning fireplace, and beautiful landscaping.
Our lovely neighborhood is nestled in a quiet area of Paradise Valley, bordering Scottsdale and Phoenix. We are surrounded by great shopping, fantastic restaurants, resorts, golf courses, Spring Training professional baseball stadiums, theaters, museums, and hiking and bike paths…if you can pry yourself away from the house!
Why we love our home: We fell in love with this home immediately because of its warm ambiance, beautiful colors and unique charm. The 'clincher' was the property itself, with its large, private backyard and inviting desert landscape. This home has a special character that we enjoy every day.
This is not a 'cookie-cutter' home. Built by two of the top architects and custom home builders in the Valley, our home reflects the personal passions of its owners. The original owner was a gourmet cook (see the home's delightful cook's kitchen) and bookbinder (notice all of the built-in book shelves). Every archway in the home is different and comes from memories of her foreign travels. We have added our own 'stories' to the home as well (enjoy the art collected from our travels) and the comfortable furnishings that lend themselves to our casual lifestyle. We enjoy spending time outside as much as inside, and have designed several comfortable dining and seating areas under the 'portales' as well as on the patios around the pool. In the covered patio adjacent to the main house, there is a moveable standing heater and a ceiling fan, as well as a misting system, to keep you warm in the evening, or cool during the day as desired.
Guests will have access to all of the main house, the guest house, the two driveways and the front and back yards. Our cars will be parked in the 3-car garage but there is ample parking on both driveways.
Three bicycles, a set of dumbbells, tennis rackets, various sports balls and a jump rope are kept in the garage and are available for your use.
Interaction with guests
If we are available, we look forward to greeting you, familiarizing you with our home and answering any questions you have. You can reach us on our cell phones at all times during your stay.
Other things to note
Our backyard is among the few in Paradise Valley carpeted with a large area of natural grass. It adds a warmth and peacefulness to the several seating arrangements you'll find there.
And because our home was built before the fencing-around-pools requirements, access to our large unheated pool is not obstructed by walls, fences and gates. Therefore, strict adult supervision of children and others with physical limitations, while in the backyard, is always a must!
Our home is our sanctuary. We live in it when we're not traveling and we expect our guests to treat it like they would their own. Specific guidelines include:
- No smoking (indoors and outdoors).
- Well-behaved children over 12 are welcome.
- Ours is a very quiet neighborhood, so please respect our lovely neighbors and avoid loud activities.
- No pets.
- Our beautiful Saltillo tile and wood floors will be damaged by small stones that are tracked in by shoe treads, so we kindly ask that people check their shoes before entering the house. Also, our tile and wood floors will be damaged if spills of any kind are not immediately cleaned and dried, so we ask that you do that as well.
- Feel free to open our Marvin wood windows weather permitting, and please remember to lock them when closed to avoid warping.
- Maximum of 8 guests.

Originally from Chicago, we have called Arizona home for 27 years. Currently retired, we spend most of our time enjoying the relaxing Arizona lifestyle or traveling to other parts of the world. I am a jewelry artist and my husband Dan, a retired businessman and recovering lawyer, is an avid tennis player and is active in the community. I often find him in the yard, tending to the roses or harvesting lemons and grapefruit from our trees. We LOVE our home.
