The space
(July 3rd, 2020 Covid-19 Update: Belize is officially opening August 15th its international airport to foreign travelers. As you may know Belize had a total of only 24 cases and only two deaths and thus has been very careful in its was re-opening.
In the meantime, we have seized the last 4-months of time to totally renovate Bird Island; new is an enclosed white-sand beach area, over-the-water bar, a brand new upstairs lookout apartment, an equipment room filled with the best of outdoor gear, expanded new outside eating area and totally new interiors to all 4 separate places to stay. Please note the new pictures posted already and the ones going up the next two months. Despite these superb additions, costs will remain the same till the end of 2021.)

Other things to note
Important Added Information. (Updated June, 2020)
#1- Getting to Placencia from Belize City:
By Shuttle: All-in-One Travel Services, $90 per person (each way); pick up at Belize International airport. 3-hour ride. (011-501-620-2267 / 515-7225). Private SUV and individual help. Great folks.
By Rental Car: between $90 - $100 USD a day; roughly 3 hour drive. We have our own private place to leave your rental car while in Placencia.)
By Air: (Maya or Tropic Air) $135 USD each way per person / 40 minute flight. Fastest way.
By Taxi : $300 USD each way by SUV (4 people); $350 USD by van (6 people).
(Note: If going to Bird Island the same day as arriving, the shuttle/rental car/taxi way works as long as one is arriving in Belize International by 1pm (it is a 3hr drive to Placencia + 1 hr for food shopping + 30 minutes to get to the island by 6pm; it gets dark in Belize by 6:30. If arriving to Belize International after 1pm it is best to fly to Placencia.

#2- Length of stay: We have a minimum of 4 days. Also good to keep in mind, as a general rule we have a 72-hour window between guests for general cleaning and/or maintenance. It has also served us well to be able to accommodate guests wanting to stay 1-2 days longer than they expected.

#3- In order to help you with your logistics, we can pick you up at the Placencia airport at 11am (or later) or where you are staying on the day of your stay. We can then take you food shopping and off we go. Pick-up from the island should be about 2 hours before departing Placencia.

#4- The trip from Placencia Village to Bird Island is included in the price (18 minutes). As a default, if no other pre-arrangements are made, we meet at 12 Noon (or later) at the centrally-located UNO gas station dock, (by M&M Hardware, a huge orange building and parking lot in the very middle of town). It is the only gas station in town. Please note that this dock is different than the new public dock which is at the very end the peninsula.

#5- Sleeping accommodations: The island's has now four separate buildings with sleeping accommodations; the main house which has a master bedroom with a queen-size bed with all amenities. The 2nd building is a new over-the-water, totally self-contained cabana (cabana #1), also with queen-sized bed and also with all amenities. The 3rd building is a quaint small cabana with a twin-sized bed, desk, etc but just no bathroom facility (yet) and lastly the 4th place is a brand-new upstairs suite with full amenities.

#7 - Extra Guests: Upon booking, if you are not sure how many extra guests there will be, perhaps it is best to book only 2, but change your reservation as you get closer to actual arrival. The island is geared towards 2-6 people; even now 8 depending on group composition.

#8 - Side Tours: While staying in Placencia or Bird Island: We have our own tour company (see Privasea Adventures) which caters to smaller private groups that want to visit the main reef, our tour's emphasis is on total comfort and fun. We include an excellent lunch, the use of the best equipment including even Yamaha Sea-Scooters.
There are three side tours we highly recommend: Monkey River while staying in town; and visiting the main Belize Reef while staying at Bird Island; also our 'Smorgasbord' trip for fishing, snorkeling and lobstering on the first day of your stay at the island. We do not do diving.

#9 - Exclusivity. Yes, when you book Bird Island, you will have the entire island all to yourself in absolute privacy. There is no staff on the island, which makes Bird Island the only truly totally-private island offering in Belize, since there is no one else staying in the island while you are there.

#10 - Security: Though Bird Island is only 6 miles away from town and inside its own atoll, we share a security association with two other nearby islands.

#11- Food: Bird Island is normally a self-catering scenario, so plan to bring just enough meats, vegetable and drinks (i.e. liquor) for your stay. We do assist you with your food shopping. The island does have a very well-stocked kitchen with a myriad of condiments such as cake mixes, flour, rice, spices, oils, paper towels, garbage bags, etc., so you are not required to think of every little thing. Food shopping is a very simple affair and will be the very last step before leaving for Bird Island. The island has refrigeration, chest freezer and 2 Yeti coolers for ice at the new bar.

#12 - Drinking Water: The island has a well-filtered rain-water system for all general uses. However, we still provide purified bottled drinking water for drinking. No need to worry about bringing drinking water yourself.

#13 - Wading slipper-type shoes. The island is surrounded by sand flats and within 100 feet a spectacular reef with live coral; bringing soft shoes that cover your toes and ankle are a good thing to have when walking about. There are many pairs in the island already however, that may fit you.

#14 - Snorkeling equipment: Bring your own if you prefer (specially a mask) though we do have a full service snorkeling shop with the best equipment in the mainland and we can lend you what you need. Also IF you are a certified diver and would like to use our 15ft-dive Brownie Third-Lung outfit during your stay, let us know and we will bring it out and leave it on the island during your stay.

#15- Fishing equipment: The island is usually surrounded by constant marauding schools of fish (jacks, snappers, etc) feeding around it. The over-the-water buildings in Bird Island are filled with every kind of fish. If you want to do bottom fishing, you should buy some shrimp bait when food shopping. The island now has a new fishing dock and rods.

#16 - Refrigeration: The island has a propane refrigerator with a fair-size freezer and now a separate chest freezer to maintain ice during your stay. Bringing at least four (6) bags of ice is always a good idea.

#17 - Communication. A local phone is at the island so you can make local calls. The island has reliable WiFi.

#18 - Power. The island runs on solar-power and has a wind generator; so no noisy generator.

#19 - Getting around the atoll. There are 2 single-person plus 2 new double-person kayaks to cruise the atoll that surrounds the island. There are also many additional excellent floating devices.

#20 - Music - The island has a Bose Bluetooth speaker to play your own music from your phone. Please no streaming music, it is a bandwidth killer. :)

#21 - Sun Tan Lotion and Bug Spray. Remember, it is the tropics; the best type of suntan lotion is one of a high Block Factor, either lotion or spray type. As to bugs (i.e. sand flies, mosquitoes), unlike the mainland or most other islands, Bird Island just doesn't have them, in fact it is one of the things our guests really appreciate the most.

#22 - Places to Stay in Mainland: if coming before your stay and plan to stay in Placencia, there are many places to stay today right on the Placencia beach, and walking distance to where we leave from. May we suggest Brisas Oceano right in town, the more upscale Nirvana, or the very cozy, one-mile-away-from-town Mariposa Resort.

#23 - General weather pattern:
January-June 15th: is considered the 'dry season'.
June 15th-July 15th: the first seasonal rains tend to occur.
July 15th-September 15th: usually is very nice weather, interrupted by the occasional 30-minute passing shower.
September 15th-October 30th: the second seasonal rains tend to occur, again passing showers.
November 1st-December 30th daily scattered thunderstorms here and there but great weather in long stretches between them. Exceptional time to visit.
(Please note that weather in Belize tends to be pleasant, specially at Bird Island which is in a rain shadow and inside an atoll, so its surrounding waters stay clear even if windy. Weather. needless to say, we could never guarantee, so the above is only a rough guide.

Last Note: Bird Island is always undergoing improvements each year. Two seasons ago we added new decks, a fishing dock and the new observatory overlooking the atoll, which guests have welcomed. Last year we did the new walkways and added an over-the-water, totally self-contained cabana and a new fishing dock and an enclosed swimming area with a gazebo over it. The unexpected 'break' in 2020 has allowed us to add a new upstairs studio, huge enclosed white-sand area, over-the-water hammocks & swings, a new sports-equipment room and a long string of other changes and improvements.

Retired not from work, but from the maddening crowd. Came to Belize in 2010. Started Bird Island in 2013. Military Service: Vietnam Era. Then traveled throughout Central and South America for 2 years, always thought I would be back. Went to Cornell University for 5 years. Lived in Sun Valley, ID area for 7 years and then in Prescott, AZ for 23 years until 2010. My two main hobbies have been fly fishing and bird hunting with my beloved English Setters which I had the supreme honor of having for three generations encompassing 37 years.
